Athenodoros Kananites or Athenodoros of Tarsus ( ancient Greek Ἀθηνόδωρος Κανανίτης Athēnódōros Kananítēs ) was a Stoic philosopher in the first century BC. Chr.

Life

Athenodoros was the son of Sandon from the village of Cana near Tarsos (in today's Turkey), probably a pupil of Poseidonios in Rhodes and teacher of Stoic philosophy in Apollonia in Epiros . He was drawn to Rome by Emperor Augustus , entrusted with the upbringing of his nephew and later adoptive son and successor Tiberius, and he was often consulted by Augustus. After Suetonius , Athenodorus also spent a lot of time with the young Claudius ; according to a letter from Augustus, he was surprised by Claudius' rhetorical skill. The historianCassius Dio mentions that Athenodorus (like his philosophical colleague Areios ) was highly valued by Augustus.

Pliny the Younger reports in the famous "Ghost Letter" that a philosopher named Athenodoros rented a haunted house in Athens and freed it from the ghost living in it - whether it is Athenodoros Kananites, however, is not certain.

Athenodorus later returned - as Strabo reports - as an old man to Tarsus and devoted himself to local politics in his native city. His services, which he had acquired through the introduction of a community order around this city, were honored long after his death through a sacrificial service.

From Athenodoros' numerous writings , often ascribed to Athenodorus Kordylion (e.g. against the categories of Aristotle , on duties, etc.) only titles and individual fragments exist . He also dedicated a work to Octavia Minor , Augustus' sister.
