Attila is a comic series by Derib (= Claude de Ribaupierre) and Maurice Rosy, which first appeared in the original French in Spirou magazine and later also in Germany.

The series

The unusual thing about the series is that the protagonist is a talking dog called Attila, who has been brought to human intelligence through science. The action takes place in Switzerland (Bastei: Käsonia ) and initially revolves around the activities of the military, which financed the experiment through which Attila gained his intelligence. Later, the intrigues of criminal elements over the riches of Arvange Castle and its young owners become the core of the series.

If the first three stories are still simple detective stories - with the fantastic element of the talking dog - the fourth story develops into a strange story with elements of magic (magic books) and science fiction (flight to an unknown planet behind the moon). An explanation in subsequent stories announced in the final picture has not been made. A fifth volume, Bak et Flak étonnent Attila , appeared in French in 1987, but it was no longer drawn by Derib and is not part of the official series.

In addition to the four official volumes, Derib also made two short stories for the series.

Figures of the series

Attila , the eponymous main character, is a selected dog from among many others, whose talents, abilities, reflexes etc. have been further developed and whose most important ability has been taught language and human "good manners". He drives fast cars, controls airplanes and likes to smoke a cigar in his dressing gown. His superiors consider him undisciplined: at the beginning of the first adventure, he separates himself from the troops, and after completing his assignment, he goes on vacation without permission.

Mr Plätzli (French Bourrillon , Bastei: Emile ) initially runs a dog hotel, then Attila recruits him as a "master" for camouflage. As a loyal citizen, he willingly serves his country, even if he repeatedly proves to be clumsy: In a courageous attempt to rescue Attila, he pursues the gangsters, but soon gives them a secret file because he is fooled by their false uniforms (album 1) . The disguise as a photographer is almost blown because of his clumsiness (album 2). He has an anecdote ready for every situation, but nobody wants to hear it through. After the experiences in the castle, he becomes the guardian of the little heir.

Oliver (French: Odée comte de Fée ; Bastei: Tommy ) is a young boy who is the heir to a castle and is under guardianship. After Attila's plane crash (album 2), he discovers that the dog can talk and quickly becomes an ally in the investigation of the nightly events in the castle. After finding the treasure of his ancestors, he is supposed to be kidnapped (album 3), which the heroes can thwart. Oliver later finds other secret rooms and even more mysterious inventions in the castle (album 4).

The grouchy, unscrupulous and strict guardian of Oliver, Mr. Grieslich , (French: Grismouron , Bastei: Mr. Sauerbein ) turns out to be a greedy treasure hunter (album 2) and does not shy away from kidnapping (album 3). Nevertheless, at the end of the story, he is never the real villain, just an accomplice to a previously unknown boss.

Z 14 is another talking dog that has been assigned to protect little Oliver (album 3) - in contrast to Attila, however, it has been trained by civilians. His boss is Professor Seiler (Bastei: Professor Helle , Salleck: Professor Kennich ), a well-known scientist who studies the mysterious inventions with Oliver (album 4).

Rudi and Locke (French: Labouf et Larazé , Bastei: Jack and Platte ) are two clumsy rental crooks who initially work for a spy (album 1) and later for a power-hungry scientist (album 4). Rudi's special quality: he is always hungry; his thoughts and remarks are mostly related to food. Locke's name is ironic because he's completely bald.
