Audschila ( Arabic أوجلة), (in ancient times Augila ) is a group of oases and oasis city in the northern Libyan desert in the Munizip al-Wahat in central eastern Libya .

geography

Like the oases of Dschalo , Sferir and Leschkerreh, the city lies in a shallow depression and is surrounded by sandy desert. It is located around 400 kilometers south of the coastal city of Benghazi on the old caravan route from Cairo to Murzuk . The cultivation of date palms is an important industry .

The city has an airport.

history

Traditionally, Berbers lived in the region of Audschila . Under Ottoman rule, the oasis belonged to the Sanjak Benghazi. The public authority was exercised by the Mudir in Jalo.

language

In addition to Arabic , Berber dialects are sometimes spoken in Audschila and the neighboring oases . However, the number of speakers of these dialects is only a few thousand each.
