August Brust (born August 1, 1862 near Essen-Werden ; † April 20, 1924 in Essen-Altenessen ) was the founder and chairman of the Christian miners' association .

Life

Breast came from a Catholic mining family and worked as a miner himself from 1878. When, after the great miners 'strike in the Ruhr area in 1889 and the end of the Socialist Act, the old association came into being and it drew closer to the SPD , Brust became the main initiator of the Christian miners' union for the Upper Mining District of Dortmund. When this was founded on October 28, 1894, Brust took over the chairmanship of the organization.

The trade union subsequently became a model for Christian trade unions in other sectors.

In the following years he further expanded the organization in the Ruhr area . With the abolition of regional restrictions, the union expanded to include other areas. In addition, Brust played a leading role in shaping the umbrella organization for Christian trade unions. Breast prevailed against the attempt of the Aachen publisher Hubert Immelen, who called for denominational organizations, with his concept of non-denominational and not directly party-politically bound unions.

From 1898 on, Brust also became editor of the association's journal “Der Bergknappe.” Since then, he has devoted himself full-time to trade union work. Breast was also chairman of the general association of Christian trade unions.

In the context of the trade union dispute within the Catholic milieu after the turn of the 20th century , Brust turned against an explicitly Catholic orientation of the Christian trade unions. Instead, Brust was ready to work with the free, social-democratic unions. The ultimate goal was to overcome the directional trade union division. These positions also met with considerable resistance within the Christian trade unions. Franz Wieber from the Christian Metalworkers' Association pleaded for a strongly Catholic orientation of the Christian trade unions.

In the light of this dispute, Brust resigned from his trade union office in 1904. Instead, he became the editor of a central newspaper in Buer . There he was also elected to the city council. From 1904 to 1918, Brust was also a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for the Münster 4 constituency (Borken - Recklinghausen). After the November Revolution he was a member of the Prussian State Constitutional Assembly between 1919 and 1921 . Afterwards he was a member of the Prussian state parliament until his death . He also became managing director of the Lower Saxony coal syndicate. After the revolution, Brust became active again in the Christian trade union movement.

Streets in Duisburg-Walsum , Dülmen and Hamm are named after Brust.
