Augustabad

The Kaiserin-Augusta-Bad (short: Augustabad ) was a women's bath in the bathing district of Baden-Baden . It was planned as a counterpart to the Friedrichsbad and designed for the exclusive use of women. The construction of the bath, whose name was dedicated to Empress Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach , took place from 1890 to 1893. One reason for the construction was the ban on gambling in the entire German Empire from 1872, which led to a repositioning of the gambling city of Baden-Baden with focus led to spa and medicinal baths.

For the difficult triangular building site between the immediately neighboring Friedrichsbad, the monastery of the Holy Sepulcher and Zähringerstraße, the head of Baden's building department, Josef Durm , prepared the building plans. In the 1930s the Augustabad had become dilapidated and consideration was given to demolishing it. This took place in 1962. At that time, several historical buildings in the Bäderviertel fell victim to a demolition. Today the area is partly built over with the Friedrichsbad terrace, which not only hides parking spaces but also the Roman bath ruins . A figure from the facade of the Augustabad recalls its earlier position.

The name Augustabad was transferred to the nearby Kurmittelhaus, which was newly built in a modern style and which was converted into the Caracalla Therme in the 1980s .
