Auguste Reuss to Köstritz

Auguste Mathilde Wilhelmine Princess Reuss zu Köstritz (born May 26, 1822 in Klipphausen ; † March 3, 1862 in Schwerin ) was by marriage Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin region .

Life

Auguste Reuss zu Köstritz was the daughter of Prince Heinrich LXIII. Reuss zu Köstritz (1786–1841) and Countess Eleonore zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (1801–1827).

On November 3rd, 1849 Auguste married Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin]. The couple had six children.

Auguste's early death raises questions. At court they spoke of a "heart disease associated with a bronchial ailment". A biographer, on the other hand, considered a "Catharilian fever" to be the cause of death, and Queen Victoria of England, who mentions the death of the Grand Duchess in her diary of March 3, 1862, only speaks of "fever". Others suspected that tuberculosis was widespread at the time . This was a taboo subject at the time. It lowered the chances of having children and thus the chances of Auguste marrying off properly would have been very slim. Her eldest son also had weak lungs.
