The Augustin - the first Austrian tabloid ( spelling AUGUSTIN - DIE ERSTE ÖSTERREICHISCHE BOULEVARDZEITUNG ) is a city newspaper that is sold by people with experience of poverty on the streets of Vienna and the surrounding area. As the Vienna city administration announced on August 7, 2019, the paper was awarded the Dr. Karl Renner Prize this year .

About the newspaper

Logo of the Augustin lovers

Augustin was created in 1995 as one of the first Austrian street newspapers from the Uhudla street newspaper project, which was founded in 1991 . The founders include Robert Sommer , Erika Parzer and Max Wachter. The newspaper takes its name from the historical Viennese folk singer Marx Augustin (“Der liebe Augustin”) and is based on international models such as The Big Issue from London. The newspaper is sold on the streets by the homeless , the poor, asylum seekers and people excluded from the labor market. The sellers keep half of the sales price of 2.50 euros. The other half finances the social work, the editing and all projects of the association. The Augustin receives no subsidies or press funding. The newspaper experienced a very high level of acceptance, whereby the circulation could be increased eightfold within 10 years. While the number of copies sold was just under 10,000 a month at the beginning of 1996, up to 30,000 copies per issue (60,000 a month) were sold in 2010. Since January 2007, the street paper has been published every fortnight, except in July, August and December. The volume is 48 pages. Recently, however, the sales figures have decreased. A very special support project was therefore started in May 2012. Since then, AUGUSTIN has had "333 lovers" who support the independent social and media project with 25 euros a month.

Augustin is a member of the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), which sees itself as a global engine to promote the fight against poverty at the local level. It connects 112 street papers in 35 countries and promotes new projects in developing countries.

The essence of the newspaper

Augustin salespeople

According to a study of the German street folk scene, which differentiates between the more “education-oriented” and the more “sales-oriented” homeless newspapers, the Augustin combines both tendencies.

On the one hand, it lobbies for people in precarious life situations, provides information about the activities of social projects and initiatives, and sees itself as a socially critical platform. On the other hand, he is addressing a mass audience - "using the means of 'advanced populism' (variety of topics, sport, culture, service elements, puzzles, etc.)". A fixed part of the newspaper (9 pages) is reserved for prose and poetry articles.

The journalism of Augustin s is also known for series in which critical aspects of the municipal and private economy are dealt with, including the Austrian Raiffeisen Association , the Vienna economy and the real estate industry. In another series, the writer Richard Schuberth published essays on Karl Kraus .

About social work

The real concept of AUGUSTIN is not to exclude any group. Those affected can join without any preconditions. In the meantime, however, the project is repeatedly reaching its limits. Not all people in need can be accepted. There are currently around 450 salespeople in and around Vienna. At the beginning you will receive a salesperson ID and will be informed of the existing additional income limits (in the case of unemployment, emergency or social assistance). They undertake not to be drunk during their work and to adhere to the rules of social coexistence. The requirements are reduced to the bare minimum in order to keep the inhibition threshold as low as possible. Every prospective saleswoman receives training, the conditions of sale and 15 free newspapers (an interpreter will be organized for beginners without knowledge of German or English). The salespeople determine the intensity and location of their sales activities themselves. During the opening hours of the sales office (Mon to Fri: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sat: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.), the sellers have the opportunity to socialize and eat, use the telephone & Internet, office supplies as well as support in life questions or information and help in social law (e.g. repayment of debts by dodging etc.), legal advice, attending a D-course and participating in one of the projects: choir, theater, table tennis , Football, writing workshop or strawanzerei as a guide. In addition, the social workers at the sales point try to achieve a good understanding with the environment, should this be necessary.

Since Easter 2018 there has been an online plan for Vienna and the surrounding area with the Augustin sales points.

Radio Augustin

RADIO AUGUSTIN (original spelling) has been broadcasting on Orange 94.0 , the Free Radio in Vienna , since 1998 and sees itself as a mouthpiece and lobby for marginalized people and as a source of information for those interested in sociopolitical and cultural interests. The medium of radio enables an abstraction of external appearances. Voices and words can be perceived in new contexts. The mainstream is not complied with, the short-lived, speed and superficiality are counteracted. RADIO AUGUSTIN broadcasts twice a week: Monday (magazine broadcast) and Friday (live broadcast), between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., in Vienna on the FM frequency 94.0 MHz and in Vienna's Telekabel network on 92.7 MHz, as well via live stream on the Internet.

Augustin TV

AUGUSTIN TV has been broadcasting ( original spelling ) on the community TV channel OKTO since 2005 . AUGUSTIN TV produces two programs per month, each of which is repeated for a week on Okto. The “AUGUSTIN TV magazine” shows reports and portraits. In «einSCHENKt», the social expert Martin Schenk addresses issues of unemployment, poverty, exclusion, integration and empowerment .
