The Burgholzhofturm

The Burgholzhof observation tower is a 27 meter high observation tower in the Burgholzhof district of Stuttgart . The listed tower stands on the eastern edge of the village above a vineyard and offers a comprehensive view of Stuttgart-East , Bad Cannstatt , the Hallschlag and the Neckar Valley to Esslingen am Neckar from the roofed platform at a height of 18.7 meters .

In 1891, the Stuttgart city architect Friedrich Keppler built a brick lookout tower in the style of a Roman watchtower at the highest point of the 359-meter-high Burgholzhof on behalf of the Cannstatt Beautification Association, which had only recently been founded . The festive inauguration took place on September 19, 1891. The construction is in the context of the general enthusiasm for antiquities in the German Empire, especially Kaiser Wilhelm II , and closely related to the construction of a dragoon barracks started in 1908 on the remains of the nearby Roman cannstatt fort .

During the Second World War , the tower was used as an observation post against approaching Allied bombers . In 1987/88 it was renovated on the initiative of the Pro Alt-Cannstatt association and since then has been opened and entertained by various associations with free entry in the summer.

A directional radio tower used by the military is located 120 meters northwest of the observation tower ( 48 ° 49 ′ 10.8 ″  N , 9 ° 11 ′ 37.4 ″  E ).
