The Rödlas observation tower , also known as the Massenrichter Turm, is an observation tower near the villages of Rödlas and Massenricht in the town of Hirschau in the Amberg-Sulzbach district in Upper Palatinate in Bavaria . The observation tower is 32 m high and is 570  m above sea level. NN , a few meters below the summit of the Rödlasberg .

history

As early as 1902, the Amberg Beautification Association had plans to build an observation tower at the exposed location. It was not until more than 70 years later that this idea was realized by the Massenricht branch of the Upper Palatinate Forest Association under its chairman Hermann Frieser. Construction work on the observation tower began in the fall of 1976 and the tower was inaugurated on August 15, 1977. With the exception of the steps, which are made of prefabricated parts, the structure is completely cast in in- situ concrete . The construction costs amounted to around 110,000 DM , part of which was paid for by the company itself and through grants.

Several providers have been using the tower for their mobile radio transmission systems since the 1990s. Deutsche Telekom installed LTE transmission systems on the tower in spring 2013 . The area covered by the tower was thus one of the first areas in Germany that could use the new LTE technology.

A webcam was installed on the tower on June 11, 2013. It is directed towards the northeast. The pictures show Massenricht as well as the two basalt cones Parkstein and Rauher Kulm .

Rödlas observation tower before renovation

In 2014 and 2015, the observation tower was renovated as part of the Geological Expedition - Upper Palatinate and Western Bohemia project. The measures were subsidized from funds from the Objective 3 program for cross-border cooperation between the Free State of Bavaria-Czech Republic 2007–2013 and the city of Hirschau.

architecture

The tower, designed and planned by architect Xaver Steinkirchner and structural engineer Hans Kohl, has an unprecedented, idiosyncratic shape. The ground plan consists of triangles shifted one inside the other. Three triangular roofed viewing platforms are installed at different heights, each over a corner. From each of these platforms you have a panoramic view of about 300 degrees. You have a full all-round view on the top platform. The tower, which is massive in itself, has a certain lightness due to the protrusions .

view

The uppermost viewing platform, which can be reached via 158 steps, offers a view in the north of the two basalt cones Parkstein and Rauher Kulm as well as the Fichtelgebirge (with Ochsenkopf and Schneeberg ) and the Steinwald , in the east of the Upper Palatinate Forest and the area of the Czech Republic, in the southeast on the northern Bavarian Forest and in the west on the mountains of the Upper Palatinate Jura, the Franconian Jura and Franconian Switzerland . Even the Arber can be seen in the southeast when the visibility is good.

Over time, the forest surrounding the tower has grown so high that there is no longer a clear view of Monte Kaolino and the Naab Mountains.

Hiking trails

Numerous long-distance hiking trails lead directly or a few hundred meters past the observation tower, e.g. B. the east line of the Main-Danube-Weg , the Wallenstein-Tilly-Weg or the Naab-Vils-Weg .

Furthermore, two circular hiking trails signposted by the AOVE lead past the observation tower. These are the 16-kilometer-long Hirschau tower path and the 12-kilometer tower path.
