Autism Speaks Inc. is a New York City based company . The non-profit organization founded by Suzanne and Bob Wright in 2005. Autism Speaks is a sponsor of research into the causes and treatments for autism. The American news magazine Time explained the study by the researcher Hakon Hakonarson on the "Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs 2009" , which was financed by Autism Speaks and made possible by the provision of the "Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE)" gene database operated by Autism Speaks

history

The company was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright. The reason was that one of her grandchildren had been diagnosed with "autism". As director of NBC , Wright managed to get autism up in all media he could interact with, not just television, but radio stations, newspapers and magazines as well. Most of the other broadcasters joined. The newly founded organization Autism Speaks became known through interviews and television broadcasts. The Wrights organized charity events and raised large sums of money. Within the first year, Autism Speaks became the umbrella organization of the National Alliance for Autism Research and the organization Cure Autism Now.

Bob Wright managed to win the support of prominent politicians and artists such as Hillary Clinton , Debra Messing , Alfred Molina , Zachary Quinto and Bruce Springsteen for the work of "Autism Speaks" .

Meaning of the name "Autism Speaks"

In German the term Autism Speaks reads : "Autism speaks". The organization explains this name as follows: “ Autism Speaks strives to unite the autistic community into one powerful voice to urge the government and the private sector to listen to our concerns and to take action to address the global health crisis . [...] Autism speaks. It's time to listen. "

Autism Genome Project

The organization is the initiator and sponsor of the Autism Genome Project, an association of over 120 researchers from over 50 research institutions in 19 countries who try to identify the genes that are involved in the development of autism.

criticism

One focus of the research, which is funded by the organization, is the question of whether autism is genetically determined and thus recognizable by prenatal diagnostics in pregnant women. The critics feared abortions as a result of this diagnosis. This calls into question the right of autism to exist as part of society. It also criticizes the fixation on genetic causes, which puts research into other possible causes of autism at a disadvantage.

It is criticized that Bob Wright is about making his ideas the non-appealable directive of Autism Speaks and asserting the interests of his organization against the interests of some autistic people. That is why more than 60 grassroots groups and disability rights organizations wrote a letter to Autism Speaks donors calling for them not to donate to Autism Speaks but to find other ways to support autistic people.
