history

In 1969 the first ATS aluminum wheels were made using sand casting , which was technically remarkable at the time. In the search for a more precise manufacturing process, Erich Stahlschmidt and Eberhard Maiworm were found. You founded Stahlschmidt & Maiworm GmbH in 1962 and introduced advanced low-pressure casting as early as 1967.

The first ATS light alloy wheels were created in 1970 using this new process, which was used for the first time worldwide. Initially, the company only served the accessories market. In contrast to the forged wheel, the low-pressure casting process allows an almost free choice of shape. The name ATS quickly became known. As early as 1971 , Porsche was the first global brand to opt for economically produced light alloy wheels for original equipment.

The “Classic” bike came on the market in 1972 and has developed into a classic that is still in demand. The "Cup" model, which has been in production since 1975, experienced a similar triumph. These wheels, which have been produced unchanged to this day, are now considered original spare parts for the VW Beetle and VW Golf I models and are in great demand among car enthusiasts all over the world.

In 1976 ATS increased productivity considerably with a new plant in Werdohl-Dresel. With its own team , ATS was active in Formula 1 for 8 years - from 1977 to 1983 . Annette Stahlschmidt took over responsibility at S & M in 1983 as manager. In 1985 ATS produced the world's first aluminum truck wheels using the low-pressure casting process.

In 1990 ATS began series production of magnesium wheels using the low-pressure casting process. With the support of the consulting firm Arthur Andersen, ATS-Beteiligungs-GmbH and Stahlschmidt - & - Maiworm-Technics-GmbH were founded as an independent research and development company. In 1991, the company put a new, environmentally friendly, water-based wet paint system into operation.

In 1993 the joint venture production of light alloy wheels started with WSK Poland. The ATS group achieves an annual production of 2 million bikes. In 1996, ATS started wheel production for Mercedes in Brazil with its partner Mangels. In 1997, the new plant in Babelegi, South Africa, started production. In India, the production of wheels for Mercedes-Benz began with the cooperation partner Hindalco . In Poland, the ATS Group founds the subsidiary Stahlschmidt & Maiworm Sp. Z oo. Production in Stalowa Wola started just a year later.

ATS was merged with the well-known South African wheel manufacturer Tiger Wheels in 1998. Series production of the first one-piece hollow-spoke wheel began in Werdohl. The partnership with PT Excel in Indonesia started in 2000 and a new paint shop was put into operation in Poland. In 2001, the Stahlschmidt & Maiworm Global Manufacturing Team was founded with the aim of creating uniform production processes in all plants. The production of bedplates started in Poland.

S & M USA Inc., founded in 2001, set up a plant in Auburn, Alabama, in 2002 and began producing wheels for assembly plants of German car manufacturers in the USA the following year. The ATS group acquired the TSW plant in South Africa in 2004. Foundry production began in Poland. ATS increased its presence in the USA in 2005 by purchasing the Warsaw, Kentucky plant.

In 2007, ATS Beteiligungs GmbH filed for insolvency proceedings. In 2008 UNIWHEELS took over the European subsidiaries of ATS Beteiligungs GmbH and thus secured the future of jobs and production plants in Germany (Werdohl) and Poland (Stalowa Wola), the group administration in Bad Dürkheim and the ATS brand. The plants in the USA and South Africa, for which separate solutions were found, were excluded from purchase.
