The OAO Avtoframos ( Russian ОАО Автофрамос OAO Awtoframos ) is a joint venture established in 1998 between the Renault group and the city of Moscow for the sale and production of automobiles. Around 2,300 people are employed here at the Moscow plant, headed by CEO Christian Esteve . After starting work, only 80,000 vehicles were initially produced here for the local market each year. In May 2010 the capacity was doubled to 160,000 units after a factory expansion. Renault has a 94.1 percent stake in the joint venture, while the Bank of Moscow will take over the remaining 5.9 percent. The factory uses the manufacturer code X7L in the vehicle identification number .
The company itself started out as an importer and car dealer . In 2003 Renault finally decided to build a plant in Russia. An investment of 230 million euros was to be spent on building the plant. In order to keep costs down, the decision was made in late 2004 to buy an existing plant from the insolvent automobile manufacturer Moskvich , which was then only renovated and expanded. On order, the first Russian Renault, the Renault Mégane from May 1999, followed by Renault Clio in late 2002, was still manufactured by Moskvich. The Renault Mégane was the last Renault model from the production of the House of Moskvich from 2004.
The Renault Logan and the Renault Clio Tricorps rolled off the assembly line on April 5, 2005 as the first vehicles from the now official Russian Renault production . The Renault Sandero followed in 2009 and then the Renault Mégane , Renault Fluence and Renault Latitude models in 2010 . Production of the Renault Duster was announced for 2012, which will replace the Logan. This will in future be manufactured for the Russian market in an AwtoWAS plant.
