The Axel-Springer-Straße is a 350-meter-long street in Berlin, from the district center in the district of Kreuzberg leads. It is located in the historic Friedrichstadt district . It was created as a separate street in 1996 by separating the northern part of Lindenstrasse .

location

Axel-Springer-Strasse begins on Oranienstrasse and runs northeast to Leipziger Strasse on Spittelmarkt . The house numbers were initially not changed after the street section was separated from Lindenstrasse. They run in a horseshoe shape from house no.39 at the corner of Oranienstrasse to the end and back to house no.65.

Naming

In 1996, part of Lindenstrasse was named after the German newspaper publisher Axel Springer (1912–1985). The publishing house he founded with the Axel Springer high-rise is located at Axel Springer Strasse 65.

history

Construction work on the Spittelmarkt to connect Axel-Springer-Strasse to Leipziger Strasse , 2011

The history of the street begins with the renaming of the northern part of Lindenstrasse. In 2011 a cycle path was set up on the roadway on Axel-Springer-Strasse and Lindenstrasse. Already in connection with the International Building Exhibition (IBA) there were considerations to set up a separate cycle lane .

In 2012, Axel-Springer-Strasse, which until then ended on Beuthstrasse, was extended to Leipziger Strasse on Spittelmarkt. This restored the historic connection between the Lindenstrasse / Axel-Springer-Strasse and the road network in Berlin-Mitte, which was interrupted by the construction of the Wall in 1961. According to the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschlands (BUND), the much-used old / new connection leads to the limit values for noise, fine dust and nitrogen dioxide being exceeded . It was also criticized that the construction costs of 11.4 million euros for a section of road 90 meters in length would be too high. Residents had previously tried to prevent further construction of the road by taking legal action.

The topping-out ceremony was held in 2018 on the construction site of the Media Campus Axel-Springer-Straße 59-63 . In June 2013, the Springer Group launched a planning competition for a digital media center, which is to offer 3,500 new jobs and whose architecture is to be radically different from the previous high-rises, and invited 22 architectural offices to do so. The architect group Rem Koolhaas won the competition with a relaxed building, the centerpiece of which is the atrium , which is over 30 meters high . The atrium symbolizes the course of the Berlin Wall. The building is intended to mediate between the Berlin building block and the Axel Springer high-rise, to which it opens. Interconnected terraces and a public work area create an environment for individual and collective work. A large “eye” is being created towards Lindenstrasse. Mathias Döpfner , Chairman of Axel-Springer AG, formulated the expectations as follows: “The building should not only be overwhelmingly beautiful, but also address the question: What does matter mean in a dematerialized media economy, what does an office mean in a mobile working environment that You don't really need offices anymore? ”The new building should be so avant-garde that not only street passers-by are amazed, but it should also offer digital natives opportunities for new creative work.
