Axel von Harnack

Friedrich Hermann Julius Axel Harnack , from 1914 von Harnack (born September 12, 1895 in Wilmersdorf , † June 17, 1974 in Tübingen ) was a German librarian , historian and philologist .

family

Axel von Harnack came from a family of scholars, he was the youngest child of the theologian and science organizer Adolf von Harnack and his wife Amalie Thiersch (1858–1937). Adolf von Harnack and his seven children, including their son Axel, were raised to the Prussian nobility on March 22, 1914 in Berlin with a diploma from June 9, 1914 .

Axel von Harnack married Hedwig Thienemann (born May 20, 1901 in Essen; † August 25, 1990 in Tübingen) on September 8, 1924 in Essen , the daughter of high school professor Dr. phil. Wilhelm Thienemann and Bertha Baedeker .

Life

After attending school at Bismarck High School in Berlin-Wilmersdorf studied Harnack history and romance studies in Freiburg and Berlin, where he in 1920 with a dissertation on Friedrich Daniel Bassermann and the German Revolution of 1848-49 to Dr. phil. received his doctorate. He then entered the academic library service and in 1923 became assistant librarian, in 1927 library councilor at the Prussian State Library , of which his father was director from 1905 to 1921. From 1927 to 1928 he worked at the library of the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute , then again at the Prussian State Library. In 1944 Harnack was seconded to the Tübingen University Library , where he was promoted to library director in 1956 (with effect from October 1, 1937) . In 1960 he retired, but remained a private lecturer in library science and historiography at the University of Tübingen , where he had taught since his habilitation ( The Italian Libraries from Enlightenment to the Present ) in 1947.

Harnack wrote a biography of his older brother, the Prussian district president and resistance fighter Ernst von Harnack (1888–1945), and was the editor and editor of the estate of his father Adolf von Harnack. In 1947 he also published his memories of the 1942/43 trial against his cousin, the resistance fighter Arvid Harnack , and his wife Mildred .
