Barbara "Bärbel" Dieckmann (born March 26, 1949 in Leverkusen as Barbara Pritz ) was Lord Mayor of Bonn from 1994 to 2009 and from 2001 to 2009 a member of the federal executive committee and the party presidium of the SPD .

Life

Barbara Pritz was born as the daughter of a diplomat in the Foreign Service. That is why she attended the German school in Genoa from 1955 to 1958 . After the family returned to Bonn, she studied at a Catholic primary school.

Study and job

In 1967 she graduated from the Bonner Liebfrauenschule High School . Dieckmann then studied philosophy , history and social sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität from 1967 to 1972 . In June 1972 she passed the first state examination for teaching at grammar school in the subjects of history and social sciences. Bärbel Dieckmann was a teacher in Cologne from 1974 to 1977 and, after a family break, from 1983 to 1995 in Bonn, most recently as director of studies and a member of the school management at Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium .

Bärbel Dieckmann has been married to Jochen Dieckmann since 1973 . From 1999 to 2005 he was Justice and Finance Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and until April 2007 the State Chairman of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1994, the Bonn SPD elected Bärbel Dieckmann as the top candidate in the local election campaign . In this election, the voters made a deep cut in Bonn's city history . The SPD and the Greens put an end to the CDU's decades of supremacy. Bärbel Dieckmann was elected mayor by the then red-green majority of the city ​​council as the successor to Hans Daniels (CDU).

As a result of the municipal reform, Bärbel Dieckmann became full-time mayor and head of the city administration in 1995. In 1999 she was directly elected for a second term in the runoff election against Helmut Stahl ( CDU ). In 2004 she received a majority of 56.8% in the first ballot. After 15 years at the head of Bonn's city administration, she did not apply for re-election in the 2009 local elections. In September 2009, one month before the end of her regular term of office, the city council called Bärbel Dieckmann by a majority to resign, which she refused. In 2009, in connection with the WCCB against Dieckmann and two municipal project managers, the Bonn public prosecutor initiated an investigation on suspicion of infidelity in a particularly serious case. In 2010 the investigation was expanded to include the investigation of corruptibility. In March 2012, the prosecution announced that the preliminary proceedings against Bärbel Dieckmann had been discontinued due to a lack of sufficient suspicion. The criminal proceedings against the two project managers were discontinued in June 2015 against payment of a monetary requirement.

In November 2008 Bärbel Dieckmann was elected President of Welthungerhilfe . On November 22, 2018, she surprisingly resigned from this honorary position.

Public offices

She is a member of the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations . She was also appointed to the Transparency International Germany association until the end of 2019. This appeal was heavily criticized by members of Transparency International, as Dieckmann refused to help as a witness in the preliminary proceedings of the WCCB of the judiciary until the court-forced testimony in December 2017 and thus ultimately contributed to the lack of transparency in this case.
