The Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance - Against Extremism and Violence (BfDT) is a nationwide contact and initiator for civil society in the Federal Republic of Germany . The BfDT collects, bundles and networks the diverse civil society commitment for democracy and tolerance in Germany and makes it public. It supports people who are committed to a living democracy and takes on suggestions for nationwide relevant topics and questions from civil society and develops them further in its own and in cooperation activities. The Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance was founded on May 23, 2000 by the Federal Ministry of the Interior for Building and Home Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection . The full name is: "Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance - Against Extremism and Violence (BfDT)". It was founded on the anniversary of the proclamation of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany . This was intended to give expression to the normative power of the German constitution "as the basis of all state and social action".

Since the beginning of 2011, the office of the BfDT has been integrated into the Federal Agency for Civic Education by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs in order to use synergy effects and bundle civil society engagement in the area of ​​combating extremism.

"Case of Rebecca K."

The decision of the “Bündnis” advisory board to award a young woman named Rebecca K. from Mittweida in Saxony a specially created “Honorary Prize for Civil Courage” aroused some public interest towards the end of 2007 . There was initially no contradiction to this. However, by the time the decision was made, investigative findings had already increased, according to which Rebecca K., who stated that she had rushed to the aid of a five-year-old girl from a family of emigrants and had been attacked by four members of the neo-Nazi scene and a swastika on the Getting scratched on the hip, scratching the skin on himself. The police confirmed these findings. The Chemnitz public prosecutor's office then investigated Rebecca K. on suspicion of faking a criminal offense. Despite the pending proceedings and the threatened indictment, finally brought in May 2008 against the then 18-year-old Rebecca K., not least against strong concerns from the ranks of the “Alliance” advisory board itself and on the part of the mayor of Mittweida, Rebecca K. was on January 31, 2008 the “Honorary Prize for Civil Courage” was awarded. At its meeting on April 21, 2008, the “Alliance” advisory board decided that “as a rule, no more ad hoc resolutions on awards to individual people or groups of people for their moral courage” should be passed if “there are pending investigations in the matter are not yet completed ".

Neukölln Alliance

In March 2018, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice issued an instruction to stop the payment of prize money to a festival of the Berlin Alliance Neukölln. Advisory board member Martina Renner criticized that the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution had blocked the award of the alliance "in an unacceptable manner".
