Bünsow-Land is a peninsula on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard .

geography

Bünsow-Land is north of Nordenskiöld-Land and west of Sabine-Land . In the north and east it borders on Olav-V-Land . The border glaciers are the Nordenskiöldbreen, Lomonosovfonna and Tunabreen. The usual route leads north on these, for example for excursions to pyramids or to Newtontoppen . In the south and west, the peninsula is bounded by the three innermost arms of the Isfjorden : Tempelfjorden, Sassenfjorden and Billefjorden.

tourism

Bünsow-Land is in Management Area 10 , so it can be freely entered by tourists without a permit. Excursions with motor sledges or dog sleds from Longyearbyen to the Tempelfjord , where the Noorderlicht is usually frozen in the ice in spring and serves as a temporary hotel, or to the abandoned mining settlement Pyramiden northwest of Bünsow-Land are popular. In the Adolfbukta in the north of Bünsow-Land, on the way to Pyramiden, a new hut was recently built as a starting point for tourist expeditions.

etymology

Bünsow-Land bears its name in honor of Friedrich Christian Ernestus Bünsow , a Swedish businessman who played a key role in Gerard Jakob De Geer's Spitsbergen expedition of 1896.
