Tourist development

A cable car opened on February 5, 1928, which at the time was the seventh in Austria. Both the valley and the mountain station were built by the architect Rudolf Frass , an Otto Wagner student. The valley station is located directly in Mariazell.

The first ski lifts began to be built in the post-war period. Meanwhile, European Cup races are taking place. Many guests come to tobogganing , which is possible from the mountain station into town.

An adventure park Erlebniswelt Holzknechtland with a size of about two hectares was built on the mountain . The aim here is to give an insight into forestry in the past. A small artificially created mountain lake, which is located on the plateau and is used for snowmaking in winter, is integrated into the adventure park.

The Mariazeller Bergwelle event series presents open-air concerts on the floating stage.

Every year around 200,000 visitors come to the Bürgeralpe.
