Interior of the church

The former civic hospital and the former hospital church outside the old town of Sankt Veit an der Glan in front of the former Villachertor form a two-storey Gothic group of buildings around an elongated courtyard . The late medieval, later Baroque complex was first mentioned in 1321 as "hospitale extramuros de sancto Vito". The four-part, one to two-storey building complex was expanded in the 17th century and the courtyard was equipped with arched arbors and arcades. After a fire in 1829, the citizens' hospital was repaired.

church

The Bürgerspitalkirche in the north wing of the hospital, first mentioned in 1321, was consecrated to Saints Martin and Elisabeth , and later to Saint Joseph . It was desolate from 1616 and was partially renovated after the fire of 1829. The burned down roof turret was not renewed.

The small Gothic building is supported by stepped buttresses in the choir . The portal from the end of the 14th century was moved from the north side of the street to the south inner courtyard. It is adorned with profiled garments , foliage and rosette decorations in the capital zone. The relief in the tympanum shows the Man of Sorrows with the donor family kneeling. The corbels are decorated with half-figures and coats of arms. The mural from the end of the 17th century on the northern outer wall depicts the Coronation of Mary and, underneath, arms and cripples. The fragment of the head walled into the south wall probably dates from the Middle Ages. The nave was originally longer in the west, as walled-up arched openings suggest, or the hospital building was included in the northern front.

Inside, a baroque stab cap barrel spans the nave over strong polygonal wall services . As the walled-up window on the south wall suggests, the original arch of the ceiling was much higher. A strongly drawn-in, pointed triumphal arch leads into the lower one-bay choir with a 5/8 end and ribbed vault on consoles. The keystones of the choir show rosettes and tree reliefs. The Gothic tracery windows are partly walled up or renewed. From the south side of the choir, a Gothic iron door leads into a sacristy with a groin vault .

There is nothing left of the altars in the church. The panels of a late Gothic Vitus altar from around 1470, a winged altar made around 1515 with rich carved sculptures and a carved figure of St. Elisabeth dated around 1500 can be seen in the Carinthian State Museum . The panels of the Vitus altar, painted in the forms of the heavy style or crease style, are likely to come from the parish church because of their quality. The former baroque high altar from 1660/70 has been installed in the Christ the King's Church in Klagenfurt since 1931 .

Usage today

From 1984 to 1987 the complex was renovated and used for residential purposes. In autumn 2004, after another renovation, the Bürgerspital was opened as an urban cultural center: In addition to the music school, there are rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and theater rooms. The inner courtyard can be used for outdoor events.
