The office for Christmas carols , based in Graz, is the only information point in Europe on the topic of Christmas carols and Christmas customs with a database of more than 30,000 entries.

Location and activity of the office

The office for Christmas carols was founded in 1991 by Hermann Härtel as a service point for the Styrian folk song factory. It is located in the city center of Graz at Sporgasse 23 in the house of the Styrian Heimatwerk and has a branch in Mariazell . The head of the Graz facility is the Austrian musicologist and folk music researcher Eva-Maria Hois (as of 2015).

The Christmas Carol Bureau is the only one of its kind in Europe. The office's database contains around 30,000 entries on songs, texts, poems, sayings, melodies, shepherds and nativity plays on the topics of Christmas and Advent . In addition to older and newer Alpine folk music, foreign-language and folk songs , spirituals and pop songs as well as information on Christmas customs in German-speaking countries are also available.

Since it was founded, the office has been open for a good four weeks each year during Advent . During this time, the facility receives up to 50 inquiries a day - by phone, in person or by email. Inquiries for forgotten parts of text, sheet music or song translations into exotic languages ​​come from all over the world. The office service is free.

Not only the media in Austria, but also German newspapers such as Die Zeit , the radio station WDR4 , Deutsche Welle and the television station n-tv have already reported on the office for Christmas carols in Graz.
