Benjamin Roy Crisler (born January 22, 1905 in Canton , Georgia , † May 16, 1982 in Pacific Grove , California ) was an American journalist , literary and film critic .

Life

Crisler became a member of the New York Times editorial team in 1932 . After two years he became a film critic for the Times and stayed until 1940. When Ralph Ingersoll started a daily newspaper with PM with the funding of millionaire Marshall Field III in 1940, over 11,000 people applied for 150 positions. Crisler received an acceptance and switched to the paper. After the end of the Second World War he became a reporter in Europe. On his return he turned to literary criticism and wrote again for the New York Times.

In 1929, Crisler married the soprano Marguerite Cobbey, seven years his senior. The marriage lasted until her death in 1980. The couple had two children together. He retired from professional life in 1972 and lived in Pacific Grove with his wife. He died at his home on May 16, 1982 at the age of 77.
