The orchestra was founded in 1935 by the Scottish composer and conductor Ian Whyte under the name "BBC Scottish Orchestra" and was initially based in Edinburgh and later in Glasgow . In 2006 the orchestra returned to its main venue, the Glasgow City Halls , which had been renovated over several years. In 2009 Donald Runnicles took over the musical direction of the orchestra. In 2016 Thomas Dausgaard became chief conductor.

Jonathan Harvey was the orchestra's Composer in Association from 2005 to 2008 .

The BBC also includes the BBC Philharmonic , the BBC National Orchestra of Wales , the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra .
