Bacary Sagna (born February 14, 1983 in Sens ; also spelled Bakari or Bakary ) is a French football player who plays on the position of full- back.

Career

Adolescence

The French-born son of Senegalese parents started playing football at home FC Sens and his achievements were not long hidden from the scouting department of AJ Auxerre , who immediately contacted the parents of the still small Bacary. Although Auxerre was not far from Sens, Father Sagna decided that it was too early for Bacary to leave the family. According to an agreement, he was only supposed to join the youth department of the French first division club at the age of 14 - one year later.

AJ Auxerre (1997-2007)

Sagna attended the club's sports school in Auxerre and completed his courses for the Baccalauréat at the same time . In terms of sport, he quickly worked his way up to the amateur leagues and was regularly used for the club, first in CFA 2 and then in the CFA - the fifth and fourth highest division in France. Having previously played in the forward position , it was finally Bernard David (then coach of the AJ Auxerre's CFA team) who came up with the idea of using Sagna in the right- back position instead of an injured player . In the 2004/05 season, Sagna was finally a regular player in the professional team of his club, made 26 appearances and won the “Coupe de France” straight away .

He was denied further title wins in the following two years. Nevertheless, Sagna developed during the first three professional years in Auxerre to an attacking and tackling strong defender. In all three seasons he gained experience in the UEFA Cup and at the end of the 2006/07 season he was named the best right-back in Ligue 1 .

Arsenal FC (2007-2014)

On July 12, 2007, Arsenal FC officially announced the signing of Sagna at the beginning of the 2007/08 season . It was agreed not to disclose the transfer fee, but according to the French sports newspaper L'Équipe , the transfer fee amounted to nine million euros plus possible bonus payments of a further two million euros. First and foremost, the Arsenal club management linked the commitment with the hope of having found a long-term perspective player in the right-back position. However, Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger clarified Sagna's alternative uses within the defensive line or in midfield . Sagna himself emphasized that in addition to coach Wenger, it was above all the young French talents that were decisive for his move to Arsenal. He had already played together with Abou Diaby in Auxerre and with Gaël Clichy and Mathieu Flamini in France's U-21 team.

Sagna established itself in the new English environment without any significant acclimatization period. He played no fewer than 135 competitive games in the first three years, formed an effective "full-back pair" with compatriot Gaël Clichy as a counterpart on the left and was equally good with tackling and headball strength as well as the offensive flanks in the opposing penalty area. On March 23, 2008 (31st matchday) Sagna scored in the 1: 2 defeat in the away game against Chelsea with the opening goal also his first goal for Arsenal; a short time later the players' union PFA elected him after his debut season for his position in the "Team of the Year". Sagna had not won a title in London by the end of the 2009/10 season . The greatest success at that time was the move into the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2009 , but also - given the low average age of the team - the steady placement among the top four Premier League teams at the end of the season, especially after a weak start in the Sagna The 2008/09 season was awarded a considerable proportion by the technical side.

Manchester City (2014-2017)

In the summer of 2014 Sagna moved to Manchester City within the Premier League . After the 2016/17 season , he leaves the club because his contract, which was limited to the end of June 2017, was not extended.

Benevento Calcio (2018)

Sagna joined Benevento Calcio in February 2018 . There he was on the field 13 times, but his contract was not renewed.

Montreal Impact (2018-)

In August 2018, Sagna joined the Canadian Major League Soccer club Montreal Impact . By the end of the 2018 season, he played nine times for the club and scored his first goal in the home game against the New York Red Bulls (3-0). The play-offs were narrowly missed.

National team

Between 2002 and 2006 Sagna completed twelve international matches for the U-21 team France and reached the semi-finals at the U-21 European Championship in the Netherlands.

On May 24, 2007, Raymond Domenech Sagna, who was traded as the long-term successor of Willy Sagnol , called on the occasion of two games against Ukraine and Georgia for the first time in the "Equipe Tricolore" , but only three months later this completed on August 22, 2007 against the Slovakia its first international match. His only competitive game for the time being took place on October 13, 2007 against Faroe Islands ; In the squad for the European Championship 2008 , Sagna, who was suffering from an injury at the time, was not taken into account.

After the European championship, which was disappointing for the senior national team, and as a result of the good performance in England, Sagna also rose to Domenech's favor and was trusted by him in eleven qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, including the decisive and ultimately successful play-off games counted against Ireland . Not surprisingly, in May 2010, he was nominated for the squad for the world championship tournament.

At the 2016 European Football Championship in his own country, he was included in the French squad . In all seven tournament games up to the final, he was on the field for the full playing time. In the quarterfinals, he prepared the 1-1 equalizer against Ireland. The team lost the final against Portugal 1-0 after extra time.
