Bad English was an American rock band that existed from 1988 to 1991 and was best known for the hits When I See You Smile and Price of Love .
history
After the end of his band Journey in 1988, Jonathan Cain (keyboard) decided to found a new band together with Ricky Phillips (bass), the direction of which should be a bit more rocking than was the case with Journey. Both played together in the late 1970s for The Babies , whose former singer John Waite also joined the newly founded Bad English shortly afterwards. At this point Waite could already look back on some successes as a solo artist, including the number one hit Missing You . The right guitarist was quickly found in Neal Schon (guitar), also formerly active in Journey. As a drummer, Already suggested the young Deen Castronovo, who thus completed the formation.
The debut album, simply called Bad English , released in 1989 , proved to be an immediate success. With the two singles When I See You Smile and Price of Love , Bad English managed to crack the top ten of the American single charts. The release of the album was followed by a successful tour that spanned eleven months. Shortly afterwards, the band set about recording a follow-up album, which was, however, accompanied by certain tensions. While Schon and Phillips wanted to take a harder direction, Waite and Cain preferred softer material. Waite was also dissatisfied with the producer of the new album, Ron Nevison , which eventually led to him recording his vocal tracks with another producer. Even before the second record Backlash was released, the breakup of Bad English had already been decided. The album sold well, but could not build on the success of the debut. After the end of the band, Schon and Castronovo Hardline joined. John Waite acted again as a solo artist, as did Jonathan Cain. Ricky Phillips released an album together with the former Toto and Le Roux singer Fergie Frederiksen .
