Bad Salzelmen has been a district of Schönebeck (Elbe) since 1932 and is a state-recognized spa in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt . It was created in 1894 by merging the towns of Groß Salze and Elmen to form the town of Groß Salze. The town of Groß Salze was renamed "Bad Salzelmen" in 1926.

history

Bad Salzelmen can look back on more than 800 years of salt mining history . Brine was extracted in Elmen as early as the 12th century . With the “white gold”, the Pfänner, later also known as the Salzgrafen, gained a great deal of influence over the place. As a pancake they were not only a commercial association, but also spoke law as an authority. Parts of the city wall from the 14th century, the former town hall from the 15th century and the St. John's Church from the middle of the 15th century still bear witness to the wealth and power of the Pfänner. Today the Salzland Museum is located in the town hall . In 1680 the city of Groß Salze went to the Brandenburg-Prussian Duchy of Magdeburg . As a so-called immediate city, Groß Salze was directly subordinate to the government of the duchy and was located in the Holzkreis . The graduation tower was built between 1756 and 1765 with a total length of 1837 meters, making it the largest ever built. The "Royal Prussian Saltworks" located at the time was the largest state-owned company in Prussia . In 1776 the 32 meter high brine tower was built near the graduation tower. It served the brine extraction by means of a Dutch "wind art". The saltworks was connected to the Schönebeck harbor by an operating railway.

The history of the health resort Bad Salzelmen began when Johann Wilhelm Tolberg discovered the healing properties of brine . In 1802 the first salt water spa in Germany was opened here. In 1815 Ernst Leopold Fabian was appointed salt office inspector.

The brine was obtained by flushing out underground. The resulting caverns ("Graf-Moltke-Schacht") later served as underground inhalation rooms and during the last years of the Second World War for storage and storage. a. of museum holdings of the Staatliche Museen Berlin and archives of the German Academy and the Prussian Secret State Archives .

The extraction of brine for the purpose of salt production was stopped in 1967, but the brine is still the basis for the spa operation. 300.4 meters of the original graduation tower are still preserved today and serve as an open-air inhalatorium. An inhalatorium is attached to the graduation tower in a south-westerly direction. The “Solepark” with the “Solequell” recreational pool, the “Lindenbad” spa center and the “Kunsthof” (partly in the brine tower ) are today attractions for those looking for relaxation and spa guests. The Bad Salzelmen Rehabilitation Clinic, built in 1995, is the center of modern rehabilitation medicine in the field of brine treatment.
