history

Alzey station track plan at the opening

The station was built in 1871 by the Hessian Ludwig Railway as part of the construction of the Alzey – Mainz line and the Rheinhessenbahn . Three years later it was connected to the Donnersbergbahn to Kirchheimbolanden and Marnheim . The branch line to Bodenheim was officially opened on September 28, 1896 , but it was closed after almost 100 years.

The station building was like the located near the train yard from Flonheimer sandstone built. The station restaurant had in the 1920s, two waiting rooms for the 1st and 2nd class, and for the 3rd and 4th class. In 1922, goods handling and express handling were merged.

At noon on October 19, 1944, the station building was destroyed by a bomb attack. A barrack served as a replacement until the end of the 1950s. The new construction of the reception building went into operation in several stages between 1954 and 1961. Until then, only travelers with a valid ticket or visitors with the so-called platform ticket were allowed to pass the platform barrier.

In 1954, a train station cinema was opened opposite the train station .

Train operation

Due to its location in the middle of Rheinhessen, Alzey station is connected to three operating railway lines:

  • The Alzey – Mainz line runs from the northeast to Alzey station . From the state capital Mainz to Alzey and vice versa operate regional trains in every hour . The offer is supplemented by regional express trains that also run every hour . There is a short half-hourly service from Alzey to the state capital and vice versa. Since the 2014/15 timetable change on December 14, 2014, trains on the Alzey – Mainz route have been connected to and from Kirchheimbolanden via the Donnersbergbahn. In rush hour traffic , individual trains run to and from Frankfurt am Main via Mainz.
  • By completely Rheinhessen called runs Rheinhessen train : the railway line from Worms to Bingen. It stretches from Worms main station in the south-east through Alzey to Bingen am Rhein in the north-west of Rheinhessen. There is an hourly service in both directions. The connection is always made via the Alzeyer train station by regional trains.
  • Thanks to the Donnersbergbahn , which was partially reactivated in 1999 , Alzey also has a quick connection to the Palatinate . Regional trains also run here every hour. The trains of the Donnersbergbahn to and from Mainz have been connected since December 2014.
  • Alzey also has a direct connection to Wissembourg in France in the summer months from May to September through the so-called Alsace Express . This initially runs from Mainz main station via the Rheinhessenbahn until it continues its way via Bad Dürkheim and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse to France.
  • Until the mid-1980s, the Alzeyer station was also the start and end point of the railway line to Bodenheim ( Amiche ).

Freight depot

To the south of the Alzey train station is the Alzey freight station, which was shut down decades ago. The buildings have meanwhile been sold and rented and the bus station and a shopping market were built on the open space of the freight yard .

Depot

Also to the south was a railway depot (Bw Alzey) built in 1904 with a 4-person locomotive shed , roundhouse with turntable and other smaller operating buildings. The depot lost its independence in 1952 and became a branch of the Worms depot. In the following years the depot was gradually shut down. The turntable has long been removed and the roundhouse is rented to a bus company. The other engine shed is a listed building, but it is unused and in danger of collapsing.
