The Darmstadt Nord station is a junction station in Darmstadt . The passenger station , where trains of the Odenwaldbahn and Rhein-Main-Bahn stop, has four platform tracks. Two additional tracks for freight traffic run parallel to the station - to the north .

history

The north station was built from 1909 to 1912 for the workers and as a link for the Merck company . It was created in the course of the construction of the new Darmstadt main station . The routes connecting the new main train station also had to be rebuilt. The north station was supplemented on this occasion. It was opened on April 28, 1912, but since the construction work could not be completed on time, scheduled traffic started on May 15, 1912.

architecture

The heritage-protected train station in traditionalist architecture from the beginning of the 20th century was built according to plans by the building council of the Mainz Railway Directorate , Friedrich Mettegang . The station building is located on the embankment of a road bridge and accesses the two platforms from above via a corridor in a transverse tract and stairs . The southern platform roof is a classicist iron construction from the early years of the railroad in Darmstadt. It comes from an older, unknown station and was rebuilt at the North Station.

Traffic importance

West view

The railway lines in the direction of Darmstadt Hbf and Frankfurt Hbf or in the direction of Babenhausen and Reinheim meet at the station . There is also an approximately seven-kilometer-long connection route for goods traffic from the Stockschneise junction (near Weiterstadt ) to Darmstadt-Kranichstein with links in the opposite direction to Darmstadt's main train station and Arheilgen .

At first the station was a through station . The routes from the Odenwald and from Aschaffenburg ran on separate routes to Darmstadt's main train station. After the Second World War , it changed into a separation station when the route of the Odenwaldbahn was dismantled and the trains were led to the main station on the Aschaffenburg tracks.

In 2005, the Odenwaldbahn's passenger train tracks to the south received an eastern connection to the Darmstadt track of the Rhein-Main-Bahn, which in turn was connected to the freight train route with a switch connection. This conversion for nine million euros made it possible for trains of the Odenwaldbahn to travel directly over the so-called Frankfurt curve - originally only intended for freight train traffic - in the direction of Arheilgen to Frankfurt am Main , creating a crossing station .

The overpass of Frankfurter Straße , on which bus and tram lines run, runs parallel to the transverse tract of the north station.

The Nordbahnhof is a junction point for local transport. There are connections to the regional transport lines to Wiesbaden Hbf , Darmstadt Hbf, Aschaffenburg Hbf , Frankfurt (Main) Hbf , Erbach (Odenwald) and Eberbach as well as to trams (lines 6, 7, 8: Arheilgen - Eberstadt / Alsbach) and buses (line R : Darmstadt Nordbahnhof - Darmstadt Böllenfalltor) of HEAG mobilo .

From summer 2008, DB Regio operated on the RB 75 with double-decker trains and locomotives of the 143 series , while the non-federal Hessische Landesbahn has been operating with Alstom Coradia Continental multiple units since December 2018 . The non-federal railways VIAS runs on the Odenwaldbahn with Itino - railcars .
