Railway stations in Rhineland-Palatinate |
The Unkel train station , built in 1870, is a station on the Right Rhine Line and the only train station in the city of Unkel . The station has three platform tracks on two platforms . Regional traffic is organized by the Rhein-Sieg transport association. In the station categorization (categories 1–7) of DB Station & Service AG , the station is classified in category 5.
history
After the railway line on the left bank of the Rhine was completed in 1858, construction began on the railway line on the right bank of the Rhine from Beuel to Neuwied . There were discussions about which stops there should be between Honnef and Linz . The places Erpel , Rheinbreitbach and Unkel each wanted a stopping point for themselves. The railway company originally did not want to approve a stop. After protests by the mayor and the district administrator, first Unkel and later Erpel received his train station.
The station was designated in 1888 as the residential area of the Unkel community with 8 residents.
The reception building was closed in the summer of 2006 after the station pub had been abandoned. As a replacement for the lack of waiting facilities, a weatherproof bench was built on the platform for the direction of travel to Koblenz. On March 1, 2011, around noon, there was a major fire in the former freight yard building. The station building was not affected by the fire.
On the night of February 7th to 8th, 2019, another major fire broke out in the area of the train station when three freight wagons loaded with hygiene articles went up in flames, triggering a large-scale deployment of the Neuwied district fire services. The fire caused massive disruptions in rail operations on the right bank of the Rhine between Cologne and Koblenz.
