The Žilina – Bohumín railway is a main line in Slovakia and the Czech Republic . It runs along the Kysuca River , crosses the border between the two countries in the Beskids and then runs along the Olsa - mostly near the Polish border - northwest.

history

See also main article: Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn

Construction of the line began in 1867. First, in February 1869, the section from Oderberg to Teschen was put into operation. After the previous operators had financial difficulties, a consortium called the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn was founded , which took over the construction and was able to start traffic on the route from Teschen to Žilina in January 1871. The rapid construction was accompanied by a loss of quality, so that repairs were repeatedly necessary in the first few years of operation.

The railway line was originally designed as a single track. In 1898 the section Čadca - Jablunkov (with the exception of the tunnel at the Jablunka Pass , which only went into double-track operation in 1917) was completed with two tracks. In 1907 the section Jablunkov-Teschen followed, in 1915 Teschen-Oderberg and Čadca-Žilina. The line has been electrified since 1963/64.

The route was relocated in the 1960s. A new route between Louky nad Olší and Dětmarovice - which is on the Bohumín – Kraków railway line - was built. The previously used route from Louky nad Olší to Bohumín has only been used for freight traffic since then.

Current condition

The railway line is one of the most important transport links between Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Most of the long-distance trains between the Czech Republic and central and eastern Slovakia run on it. It is also used by several local trains every day, most of which depart from Žilina and end in Čadca and from Bohumín in Jablunkov . Freight traffic is of great importance.
