The Ludwigslust – Wismar railway is an electrified main line in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In the Ludwigslust - Bad Kleinen section , it is double-tracked, and then single-tracked to Wismar.
history
Before 1945
After the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin got its first rail connection with the Berlin-Hamburg Railway in 1846, the Hagenow – Holthusen – Schwerin connection was opened in 1847 . On July 12, 1848, the extension to Wismar followed, and one year later the Bad Kleinen – Rostock railway started from Bad Kleinen station .
In 1888 a connection from Holthusen to Ludwigslust on the Berlin-Hamburg railway was put into operation. Continuous traffic from Schwerin to Wittenberge and on to Magdeburg and Berlin took this route from then on. Ludwigslust – Wismar was and is also regarded as a uniform route within the railways. The line was single-track between Ludwigslust and Holthusen. In the period from 1935 to 1945 there were sidings in Wöbbelin (to the concentration camp there ), in Pulverhof to the munitions plant and in Holthusen to Neu Pampow.
From 1945
After the Second World War the importance of the route grew. After the division of Germany, the seaports in Rostock and Wismar became significantly more important, and there was also a considerably increasing importance in passenger traffic. The second track was built in the 1970s.
At the end of the 1970s, the route was relocated north of Ludwigslust. A little later it branches off from the Berlin-Hamburg railway. As a result, the route length increased by about 593 meters. Therefore, a kilometer change (excess length) was introduced (see right).
In 1986/87 the line was electrified. At that time, the section south of Bad Kleinen was one of the busiest routes in the north of the GDR. In the summer, almost 15 pairs of express trains ran from Schwerin to Magdeburg. There were also three express trains and a city express from Schwerin to Berlin, plus a few amplifiers for weekend commuters.
Since 1990
On December 31, 1992, a serious rear-end collision occurred in the Holthusen station when the express train from Rostock to Leipzig collided head-on with a shunting locomotive.
In the course of the reunification of Germany there was a shift in traffic flows from the north-south relation to the east-west direction. In addition, the trains between Rostock and Hamburg, which used to run via Lübeck, have been via Schwerin since the second half of the 1990s. The route was modernized in sections as part of the German Unity No. 1 traffic project for maximum speeds of up to 160 km / h. For the time being, the expansion only took place in the section from Holthusen to Carlshöhe.
In spring 2001, the new Schwerin Mitte stop near the city center went into operation and a continuous regional express line to Berlin was set up.
In the years 2002–2005, the Schwerin main station was modernized, with the length of the platform on tracks 2 and 3 being increased. When the bridge over the Obotritenring was renewed at the same time , the entry track from the freight station to the railway depot west of the station was interrupted. In order to be able to continue to use the depot, a switch was installed in the direction of the depot directly from the bypass of track 4.
The formerly independent freight station in Schwerin was downgraded to a station part of the main station and has since been abandoned. Some tracks of the freight yard are used as station tracks for parking passenger trains.
The Petersdorf stop in Petersdorf (Mecklenburg village) was abandoned when the timetable changed in December 2012, as extensive expansion measures would have been necessary for continued operation.
The section between Carlshöhe and Bad Kleinen has been completely renovated since July 2017. A deep foundation was placed in the area of the Kronshof bog and an electronic signal box was built. In preparation, the platforms and the level crossing at Lübstorf station had already been renewed in 2014.
Todays situation
Since December 9, 2018, the line has been able to travel at 160 km / h instead of the previous 120 km / h, and track switching operations have also been possible since then .
The entire length of the route is used by regional trains every hour. Trains run alternately on the RE 2 line, which has been operated by the East German Railway since December 2012 and continues to Cottbus via Wittenberge and Berlin , and the RB 17 line of the DB Regio Nordost only between Wismar and Ludwigslust. Due to major timetable adjustments, the RB 18 line was also introduced between Schwerin main station and Bad Kleinen for the 2016 annual timetable in order to maintain the connections at the Bad Kleinen junction.
On the Bad Kleinen – Schwerin – Holthusen section, ICE 26 trains also run from Karlsruhe via Hamburg, Schwerin and Rostock to Stralsund and temporarily to Binz, as well as the RE 1 regional express line from Hamburg to Rostock. In summer there is an Intercity from Rostock via Bad Kleinen, Schwerin and Ludwigslust to Leipzig.
