Swell:

The Mühldorf – Freilassing railway is a main line in Bavaria . The line operated by the Südostbayernbahn (an organizational unit of Deutsche Bahn ) runs from Mühldorf am Inn to Freilassing . It is part of the main line for Europe ( TEN project 17).

history

Railway line towards Freilassing (between Tittmoning-Wiesmühl and Fridolfing)

The continuous Mühldorf – Freilassing rail link went into operation on December 1, 1908 as one of the last lines to be built by the Royal Bavarian State Railways . The route, which was also conceived as a feeder line to the Tauern Railway and is therefore known as the "Bavarian Tauern Railway", was created by linking and expanding existing local railway sections :

  • Mühldorf – Tüßling as part of the Mühldorf – Burghausen local railway that opened on August 10, 1897
  • Freilassing – Wiesmühl as part of the Freilassing – Tittmoning local railway that went into operation on June 14, 1890 (Freilassing – Laufen) and May 1, 1894 (Laufen – Tittmoning)

There were two options: a route from Burgkirchen (an Mühldorf – Burghausen ) to Wiesmühl (on the existing line to Tittmoning), and the Tüßling – Garching –Wiesmühl route. The latter, which was then also implemented, had the advantage, in addition to the rail connection from Kirchweidach and Garching, that the previous branch line from Traunstein to Trostberg in Garching could be connected to the new route.

In Tüßling, the route was changed on the line to Burghausen, since it was originally planned to build the branch of the Tauern Railway in Ehring. Tüßling would then have got a train station per route, which would have made changing trains much more difficult. Therefore, the Tüßling station and the Heiligenstatt stop were relocated, the line looped back to the old route and the old section abandoned.

The line was taken over on April 24, 1920 by the Bavarian Group Administration of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and is now operated by Deutsche Bahn .

While the supra-regional importance of the route was always relatively minor in the first half of the 20th century, despite individual long-distance connections, it still represents an essential local transport connection today. Several smaller intermediate stations were given up in the second half of the 20th century. The Kirchweidach stop, which was abandoned on May 29, 1988, was reopened on June 2, 1996.

The Tittmoning-Wiesmühl-Tittmoning section of the original Freilassing-Tittmoning local line, which was operated from 1908 as a branch line of the main line, was no longer used for passenger traffic from September 27, 1969, and as of July 31, 1981, for freight traffic.

At the end of September 2011, the 160-meter-long prestressed concrete bridge over the Inn , located south of Mühldorf, was put into operation as the first completed construction project on the Mühldorf – Salzburg route .

On May 22, 2017, the double-track section Mühldorf – Tüßling was put into operation. The maximum speed in this section is now 160 km / h. In the course of these construction measures, the Tüßling station was made barrier-free and equipped with an electronic signal box.

traffic

Since 2003, almost all passenger trains coming from Mühldorf have continued via Freilassing to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof . In addition, since 2005 almost all of these trains have continued to run on the Mühldorf – Landshut line to Landshut . There is a daily two-hour service on the entire route, which is increased every hour from Monday to Friday between Mühldorf and Garching by trains on the Mühldorf – Trostberg route.

In December 2018, an improved timetable came into force on the entire route (Salzburg–) Freilassing – Mühldorf. The regional trains run every hour and the operating times are extended until 11 p.m. However, not all intermediate stops are served every hour.

In freight transport, the route is operated by block trains from and to companies in the “ Chemical Triangle ” in Gendorf and Burghausen, in addition to a local train pair Mühldorf – Freilassing – Traunstein every working day . Freight trains can also be found between Mühldorf and Garching, serving customers in Garching and on the Traun-Alz-Bahn .

On the Mühldorf – Tüßling section, the “Bavarian Tauern Railway” also runs the numerous passenger and freight trains on the Mühldorf – Burghausen line.

Route expansion

The Mühldorf – Freilassing line is to be electrified and completely expanded to two-track. In addition, the electrification of the branching section Tüßling – Burghausen is planned. The line speed is to be increased to 160 km / h (as far as this is possible in the existing road). However, the financing of the construction work, which according to DB AG should originally be completed by 2012, has not been fully clarified.

For the Mühldorf – Tüßling section, the financing of the double-track expansion including electrification has now been secured, so that the then Federal Transport Minister Ramsauer anticipated commissioning in 2016 in September 2011. The corresponding financing agreement for 127.6 million euros was signed on February 14, 2013 by DB Netz AG and the Federal Ministry of Transport. In addition, a financing agreement for the three-track expansion of the line from Freilassing to the border in the direction of Salzburg was concluded for 50 million euros.

The first part of the planning approval procedure , the 3.8 km long PA 01 planning section from Altmühldorf to Mühldorf, was completed on April 12, 2013. After a two-month objection period, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 29, 2013.

The planning approval decision for the planning section PA 02 Mühldorf – Tüssling was issued on July 31, 2013. The actual construction work on this planning section PA 02 began after completion of the preparatory measures in March 2015 and was completed in May 2017. On May 22, 2017, the two-track line between Mühldorf and Tüßling went into operation.

The expansion would also relieve the Munich – Rosenheim route considerably and make it possible to increase the capacity there for freight traffic over the Brenner Pass .
