Balkan Insight ( BI for short ) is a news website on the Balkan Peninsula . It was initiated by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) , which intends to promote professional and independent reporting in the Balkans, in autumn 2007 and is its publication organ. It offers contributions from Albania , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Bulgaria , Kosovo , Croatia , Montenegro , North Macedonia , Romania and Serbia . Balkan Insight promotes balanced reporting in English according to international journalistic standards, sometimes by training journalists.

In addition to local authors and journalists, the editorial team also includes Western European and American personalities from politics and science. According to its own information, the supporters of Balkan Insight include in particular governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of Western countries such as the Dutch Foreign Ministry, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) or the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Balkan Insight is a "highly regarded Internet portal" ( NZZ ) and the BIRN organization is "valued for its independence and seriousness" ( NZZ ).
