Ballhaus (Versailles)

The Ballhaus ( French Salle du Jeu de Paume ) in Versailles is a sports hall from the 17th century that was used for the ball game called Jeu de Paume . In the early days of the French Revolution, it was the site of the so-called Ballhaus Oath .

The ballroom is located in the urban area of ​​Versailles, in today's Rue du Jeu de Paume.

When, on May 5, 1789 in the Grande Salle des Menus Plaisirs of the Château de Versailles , the Estates-General together occurred, the constitutional phase of the French Revolution began. Louis XVI who, according to the constitution, was entitled to convene and dismiss the Estates General, had the meeting room closed for political reasons. The members of the Third Estate had meanwhile declared themselves to be the National Assembly and needed a new assembly room. They then withdrew to the ballroom outside the castle grounds. There they took the ball house oath on June 20, 1789, together with nobles and members of the first class who were ready for reform .
