Baphomet's Curse is a five-part adventure series from Revolution Software that has been ported to numerous computers , game consoles, and handhelds . The English original title is Broken Sword (in German about Zerbelte Schwert ).

International naming

The series name Baphomets Fluch is only used in German-speaking countries. The first part of the series was published differently from the English original title in the United States as Circle of Blood (in German about Zirkel des Blutes ), the fourth part as Secrets of the Ark: A Broken Sword Game (in German about The Secrets of the Ark of the Covenant ) . In the French-speaking area, however, the series bears the title Les Chevaliers de Baphomet (Eng. The Riders / Knights of Baphomet ). In Spanish-speaking countries, a mixed name was chosen: the series bears the English name Broken Sword , but the subtitles of the respective games are in Spanish. For example, the first game in the series is called Broken Sword in Spanish-speaking countries : La leyenda de los templarios ( Broken Sword: The legend of the Knights Templar in German ).

Baphomet's curse

Baphomets Fluch (orig. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars ) is a comic-style point-and-click adventure game and was first released for Windows in 1996 . Since then, numerous ports have been made to other systems as well as a revised and greatly expanded version as a so-called Director's Cut . After a bomb attack in a Paris street café, the American George Stobbart tracks down the machinations of the medieval secret society of the Templars.

Baphomet's Curse 2: The Mirrors of Darkness

The second part of the game (orig. Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror ) deals with an ancient Mayan cult. The gameplay remained unchanged and the graphics were slightly modernized. The game appeared like its predecessor for Windows and PlayStation and was ported to other platforms in a revised remastered version published in 2010.

Baphomet's Curse: The Sleeping Dragon

The third part of the series (orig. Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon ) was released six years later, in October 2003, for PlayStation 2 , Xbox and Windows . In it, George was working as a patent attorney in the Congo when his plane got caught in a storm and crashed. But George succeeds in freeing himself and the pilot from the emergency and soon afterwards finds his client dead. At the same time, Nico is asked into his apartment by a hacker in Paris who claims to have made an unbelievable discovery in connection with the Voynich manuscript . But before she can find out anything, she finds him dead in his devastated apartment. Soon George and Nico meet and find out that the two murders are related. The Knights Templar, believed to have been defeated, also played a major role in the events. The two travel to the Congo, Paris, Prague , Glastonbury and Egypt .

In contrast to its predecessors, the title features real-time 3D graphics and pure keyboard control. Besides that, not much has changed. The gameplay remains the same, and the charm of the first two parts is still there, according to numerous critics of the new graphic style.

Baphomet's Curse: The Angel of Death

Baphomet's Curse: Der Engel des Todes (orig. Broken Sword: The Angel Of Death ) was released on September 15, 2006. While Charles Cecil was responsible for the design, the title was programmed on commission by Sumo Digital .

George Stobbart is now working as a lawyer in a shabby bond office. His relationship with Nicole has broken up for some time. When a young woman named Anna Maria enters his office one day, he falls head over heels in love with the mysterious beauty. Her sudden disappearance triggers George's fourth adventure. Again, the story arc includes the search for an ancient artifact of great and terrible power, in the course of which George must save the world again.

As in the third part, a 3D engine was used, but the point-and-click control was optionally reintroduced. Thematically, the game is based on film noir , with Anna Maria as the opaque femme fatale . George's former girlfriend Nicole Collard also appears as a controllable character, but takes on a rather subordinate role compared to the previous titles. This results from the changed relationship with George.

Baphomet's Curse: The Fall

On August 23, 2012, Revolution Software announced the fifth part of the Baphomets curse series and asked fans of the series for help with the financing via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.com . The game is called Baphomets Curse: The Fall of Man (orig. Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse , literally: The Curse of the Snake ) and was released for Windows PC, OSX, Linux, iOS and Android. Episode 1 of the game was released on December 4, 2013 for Windows PC and OSX; the Android, iOS and PS Vita versions are to be submitted at an unspecified time. The second and final episode was released for Mac and Windows in April 2014. Other platforms will follow. On June 24, 2014, the game was published by Koch Media Germany on DVD and as a Collector's Edition for the PC.

The action of the game begins again in Paris. Nico and George are visiting an exhibition in an art gallery when suddenly a masked, armed thief enters the room, shoots the gallery owner and flees with the picture of a snake on display. Similar to the first two parts, the game is based on a 2D cartoon style (now optimized for high-resolution computer displays) and point-and-click controls.

From 2001 onwards, a fan association called mindFactory with the toleration of Revolution Software developed an unofficial successor to Baphomet's Curse 2 . Baphomet's Curse 2.5: The Return of the Knights Templar was created entirely in the style of the first two parts in the hand-drawn 2D comic style. The developers were able to win Alexander Schottky , George's original German voice, and other professional voice actors (including Joachim Kerzel , voice of Jack Nicholson , or Dirk Meyer ) for the project without a fee. The playing time roughly corresponds to that of the original title. The fan adventure was published in September 2008 as a download for Windows PCs. Since 2016, the game has been able to run on modern PCs and computers with various other operating systems with the help of the ScummVM virtual machine .

action

The game begins after the plot of The Mirrors of Darkness . First George has to leave Nico for a long time because of business matters, then the death of his grandfather keeps him away from Paris. When he finally receives a mysterious telegram informing him of Nico's death, George immediately sets off for Europe. When he arrived in Paris, he was confused and discovered that, contrary to the telegram's statement, Nico was still alive. But the reunion is anything but warm, Nico brusquely rejects George. After meeting their mutual acquaintance André Lobineau, he learns disturbing things about Nico's involvement in the murder of the Lord Mayor of Paris and a possible return of the neo-Templars.
