Barntrup is a city in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Lippe ( Germany ).

geography

Geographical location

Barntrup, view from the southwest

Barntrup is located in the eastern part of the Lippe district and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region in the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park and its urban area borders on the Lower Saxony district of Hameln-Pyrmont in the east . Its core town is located around 5.5 km north-northeast of the Blomberger core town and about 17 km east-northeast of Detmold (both as the crow flies ). The Bega , which flows westward out of the urban area, rises southeast of the Barntruper core town , and to the east the Grießebach , which runs northeastward, and west of the Alverdissen district, the Exter , which flows off in a northerly direction.

The relief of the urban area is strongly wavy, peaks and valleys alternate on a small scale. The highest point of Barntrup is on the southern city limits at 330  m above sea level. NN , a few meters from the summit of the Beckerberg , which is already in the area of Blomberg. The lowest point is at the outflow of the Bega from the urban area at 152  m above sea level. NN .

geology

Geothermal productivity of the urban area

The Barntrup area is part of the Lippe Keuper area and consists of solid rock that formed from sea and river deposits in the Triassic 240 to 210 million years ago .

The solid rock subsoil in the urban area is up to 600 meters thick and consists mainly of limestone and, to a lesser extent, marl and dolomite stones from the former shell limestone sea. In the course of the earth's history, the subsoil was lifted out and pushed together to form saddles and hollows . Often fossils of marine animals such as cephalopods and sea lilies can be found in the limestones .

The deeper subsoil consists of rocks of the red sandstone and the ancient times . Not rarely found in the urban area sinkholes caused by the chemical dissolution of limestone by kalkaggressive waters.

In the valleys of Bega , Grießebach and Exter as well as in Uhlental, the bedrock is covered with loose rock from the Ice Age or with loess , sand and gravel.

The partially karstified limestones of the Upper Muschelkalks are particularly important for the drinking water supply in the municipality . To a lesser extent, drinking water is obtained from other rocks. To the east of Barntrup and south-east of Alverdissen, trochitic lime is mined in two limestone quarries for the production of gravel and grit. More than half of the urban area is used for agriculture. However, poor soils predominate. Brown earth and rendzine have developed from the rocks of the shell limestone . Loamy brown earths have mostly developed from the rocks of the Keuper. All soils have been severely eroded into the valleys due to the millennia of use . The soil material that has run off is in dry valleys and gullies or has been washed up as colluvium . The destruction of the forests in the north of the Lippe from the 16th century onwards as a result of overexploitation is particularly responsible for the severe erosion.

Barntrup is consistently well to very well suited for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of a geothermal probe and heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the adjacent map).

Expansion and use of the urban area

The city, classified as a "small town", extends over an area of 59.46 km². The municipal area has a maximum extension in east-west direction of approx. 11 km and in north-south direction of approx. 9 km.

history

Above the district Herborn and on the summit of the "gaff Mountain" are Bronze Age burial mounds . The earliest traces of settlement in the local area were found in finds from the later Mesolithic in the context of archaeological investigations of burial mounds in the "Frettholz". The finds (hand axes and stone axes) are in the fund of the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold.

Barntrup and Alverdissen are municipal foundations of the Counts of Sternberg , whose territory was separated from the territory of the Schwalenberg Counts in 1220. Originally Barntrup was called Barendorf and was an early settlement on Schratweg, where an old cadastre is still called "Aule Kerke". Between 1317 and 1359 was built on the "Thornesberg" the ridge, which pushes from east to west in the upper Begatal, a new Berninctorp, the planned settlement was than applied on the highest point of 189 m high mountain ridge with its three road system to old core of today's barntrup forms. In 1376 Barntrup was granted city rights by Count Heinrich the V von Sternberg.

Ten witch trials were carried out in Barntrup from 1657 to 1660 during the time of the witch hunts . The first victim was Claren Düvels, who was executed by the sword and burned after October 26, 1657. The council of the city of Barntrup rehabilitated the victims of the witch trials on September 1st, 2015.

In 1836 Barntrup was granted city rights for the second time by the then regent of Lippe.

The place was ravaged by fires a total of seven times. The most devastating was the fire on June 30, 1858, which destroyed a total of 50 buildings. Almost a third of all houses were destroyed.

In 1886 a 17 gram meteorite fell near Barntrup . It belongs to class LL4 of chondrites .

In 1896 Barntrup received a railway connection with the opening of the Begatalbahn from Lage to Hameln . The line was shut down from Lemgo in September 1980 for passenger traffic, a reactivation from Lemgo to Barntrup is planned, but postponed in the long term. The line from Barntrup to Hameln was dismantled. Another railway line was built at the end of the 1920s with the Extertal Railway to Rinteln . On the route between Rinteln and Barntrup-Alverdissen, a tourist trolley route has now been set up.

religion

In the city of Barntrup there are three Protestant-Reformed parishes in the districts of Barntrup, Alverdissen and Sonneborn.

Since 1940 there has been a Roman Catholic parish called St. Peter and Paul in Barntrup. The associated church is on Hamelner Strasse .

There are also two evangelical free church communities. These two congregations include the Mennonite congregation in Straße Im Kälbertal and a young Baptist congregation in Südstraße.

The congregation of the New Apostolic Church existed from 1963 to 2006. It was closed due to a decline in membership. The remaining parishioners took over the neighboring parish from Extertal .

An indication of the current distribution of religions can be the denomination of the students in Barntrup. According to this, 68.5% of the students in the school year 2006/2007 stated Protestant, 7.5% Catholic and 2.4% Islamic as their religious affiliation. 6.1% said they belonged to another religion and 15.5% had no denomination.

As a result of the political and religious consequences of the Reformation , as in the other Lippe offices and communities, all Catholic life in Barntrup was banned for almost 400 years. The first Catholic service did not take place again until 1940. Due to the Second World War , a Kath. Pastoral care district established to support evacuees, displaced persons and war victims. In the 1940s the services were held in the premises of the Evangelical Reformed Church (e.g. in the confirmation hall). As a result of the influx of displaced persons and refugees , Pastor Thomalla, who came from Breslau , also came to Barntrup, who campaigned for the construction of a Catholic church. In 1952 he prevailed, so that the building project on Hamelner Strasse was approved. For the first time in over 400 years, the bells of a Catholic church in Barntrup rang again at Christmas 1964, a gift from the Lower Bavarian community of Kaikenried . In 1988 the new rectory was inaugurated and in 1996 the parish was expanded to include the village of Bösingfeld in the municipality of Extertal .

The Jewish cemetery on Hagenstrasse , which was laid out before 1840 and occupied until 1936 and is now a listed building, commemorates the former Jewish community of Barntrup .

Incorporations

With the law on the reorganization of the Lemgo district ( Lemgo law ) , the town of Barntrup and the communities of Selbeck, Sommersell and Sonneborn, as well as most of the community of Alverdissen, were merged to form the new town of Barntrup on January 1, 1969. From the communities Bega and Humfeld, which were incorporated into Dörentrup, and Schönhagen, which was incorporated into Extertal, further areas were incorporated into Barntrup.

Since January 1, 1973, the city has been part of the new Lippe district , which united the former Lemgo and Detmold districts on the basis of the Bielefeld Act .

coat of arms

With a certificate from the District President in Detmold, the city of Barntrup was granted the right to use the coat of arms, flag and banner on January 27, 1971.

Barntrup coat of arms
Blazon : “Split by gold (yellow) and silver. In front a red, half eight-pointed star and behind a red, half, five-petalled rose with golden clusters and sepals at the slit. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms is a combination of two existing coats of arms. The eight-pointed star on a golden background comes from the coat of arms of the Counts of Sternberg, who founded the city of Barntrup. The five-petalled rose comes from the coat of arms of the state of Lippe to which Barntrup belonged.
Flag and banner
The flag is red / gold (yellow) stripes in a ratio of 1: 1 and carries the city coat of arms shifted to the pole.
The banner is red / gold (yellow) in a ratio of 1: 1 striped lengthways with the city coat of arms in the upper third.

Buildings

Barntrup Evangelical Church

Lower street in Barntrup

The Evangelical Church of Barntrup , formerly probably St. Maria, was founded in 1317. The vault of the nave was destroyed in a fire in 1636 due to the partial collapse of the tower. In 1638 the ship was largely renovated. The pulpit and the galleries of the Evangelical Reformed parish church were created in the second half of the 17th century.

Kerßenbrock's Castle . The builder of the facility was Anna von Canstein, who in 1567, at the age of 31, married the mercenary leader Franz von Kerßenbrock (1520–1576). Shortly after his death, she began building the current castle not far from an already existing farmyard. The large archway leading into the courtyard dates from 1577. In 1580, the Zehnthaus was built on Obere Strasse. The impressive mansion, which defines the townscape, was built between 1584 and 1588 according to plans by the master builder Eberhard Wilkening from Hameln . It is a two-story building with three corner towers. On the courtyard side there is a polygonal stair tower and a large gorge . The plastered exterior is rich with chip carving - Boss stones decorated the inside of the Weser region come here for the first time in appearance. This form of jewelry, which was probably borrowed from the rusticated cuboid of the Italian Renaissance, later became a characteristic feature of the so-called Weser Renaissance . The interior was heavily changed by alterations in 1879/90. Originally the roof of the manor house was covered with heavy brown sandstone slabsfrom the Solling , which were often used as roofing in the region. The roof has only been covered with red roof tiles since the 19th century. In 1952, the castle served as the backdrop for thefeature film " Ferien vom Ich "directedby Hans Deppe .

The town hall was built in 1907 instead of a previous building built in 1603 in half-timbered houses, which burned down in 1906. The multifaceted building, equipped with bay windows and tail gables , presents itself in historical forms.

In the town center, several gabled half-timbered hall houses from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved. These buildings, which are primarily inhabited by craftsmen, shaped entire streets well into the 20th century. In the meantime, however, many of them have been severely disfigured or even completely demolished and replaced by new buildings. After the great fire of 1858, which mainly affected the eastern half of the city, more and more eaves houses were built. - With the house Untere Straße 39 , dated 1616, one of the oldest residential buildings in the town was lost in 1972. The building, which was declared dilapidated in 1955 and had been vacant for a long time, was demolished and will later be rebuilt in the Westphalian Open-Air Museum in Detmold.

The oldest surviving residential building in the city is Untere Straße 33 , which, according to the inscription, was built in 1596. The oldest building stock also includes Untere Straße 29 from 1614, which has richly carved panels. Mittelstrasse 55 , the gable of which protrudes over Knaggen , dates from the time of the Thirty Years' War . It is designated 1646 and, like the house at Untere Straße 51 built in 1671, has an opening . The latter is also provided with carvings. Also worth mentioning are Mittelstrasse 57 , which was built in 1661, Mittelstrasse 45 and Untere Strasse 53 (both 17th century). In terms of its building history, Mittelstrasse 37 , which consists of three different components, is extremely interesting . A short part, probably dating from the 16th century, is attached to the front building from the 19th century. It is apparently the remainder of an older gable-facing hallway that was destroyed in the town fire of 1858. Nor on the sides headbands to see. A larger rear building was apparently added to this oldest core building in the late 18th century. In 1859, one year after the great city fire, Untere Strasse 7 was built. It still follows the tradition of the older gable-front hallway houses, but in contrast to these, it already has massive outer walls. However, both the inner walls and the gable were built in half-timbered houses.

Parks

In Barntrup there is the Mönchshof estate park , which is not open to the public. The historic landscape garden extends over four hectares and surrounds the manor house built in 1764. There are numerous trees from the 19th century in the park, but most of them are used as pasture.

The 1.5 hectare Barntrup Castle Park is privately owned and not open to the public. However, the castle courtyard is accessible and the park can be seen from outside. The complex was built together with the castle in the late 16th century. At the end of the 1990s, some of the old trees had to be felled due to illness. The park owner was able to save other trees from drying out further by means of a cistern system .

The Alverdissen Palace Park is owned by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and is open to the public. The 1.5 hectare complex was probably built in the 17th century. The old tree population dates from the 19th century, but many areas have been converted into green spaces.

The forest stadium has an ash court and was expanded in 1997 to include a grass pitch. There are also changing and shower cubicles.

The local soccer club RSV Barntrup rose in the 2007/2008 season as champions of the regional league season 3 in the state league and played in the state league season 1 in the 2008/2009 season.
