Barquisimeto is a large city in Venezuela . Her full name is Nueva Segovia de Barquisimeto . It is the capital of the state of Lara . It was founded in 1552 by the Spaniard Juan de Villegas and is now the fourth largest city in the country.

Geography and climate

The city is about 564 meters above sea level and 351 km from Caracas towards Maracaibo . Barquisimeto is bordered by a very dry area in the west and a subtropical area in the east. The Turbio River runs along the southern edge of the city and is surrounded by sugar cane plantations. In the south of the city there are mountains that belong to the Andes formations and have a positive effect on the climate. The average day temperature is 29 ° C, the night temperature is 16 ° C. Over 1,250,000 people live in the city (as of 2011). Population growth is 2.4% per year. Together with Cabudare (134,000) around 2 million people live in the agglomeration. 66% of the population are mestizos . Numerous immigrants from southern Europe, China, Lebanon and some from other South American countries live in the city.

Barquisimeto has been the seat of a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church since 1863 . In 1966 it was raised to the Archdiocese of Barquisimeto . The episcopal church is the modern cathedral Nuestra Señora del Carmen , which was built from 1953 to 1968 according to plans by the architect Jahn Bergkamp.

Culture

Barquisimeto is considered the musical capital of the country of Venezuela. After the Expo 2000 in Hanover , the Venezuelan world exhibition pavilion with its hydraulically moving roof elements was rebuilt in Barquisimeto and serves as a concert and event location called 'Flor de Hanover' (Hanover blossom).

In June 2003 Barquisimeto hosted the South American Athletics Championships .
