As Barrage vert (German:, green barrier, Green Dam ', Arabic: السد الأخضر, As-Sadd al-Akhdhar ) is a reforestation project in northern Algeria called, whose aim is the spread of the Sahara to stop -Wüste north and to be revised in part. It is one of the largest re-greening measures against desertification worldwide.

The project began in 1974, initially primarily to protect the Transsaharienne (Trans-Sahara Route) from silting up. By the degradation of Halfa - grass steppe the project to a comprehensive land protection measure. It has continued to this day with varying degrees of intensity and varying degrees of success.

The sub-Saharan belt in the isohyets is covered by 300 millimeters of precipitation north and 200 millimeters south, a total of around 3 million hectares . Over a length of around 1,500 kilometers from the Moroccan to the Tunisian border, a reforested strip at least 20–40 kilometers wide is to be created. By the mid-2000s, more than half a million hectares had been planted.

Aleppo pine and cork oak trees are mainly used for afforestation .
