Baselios Paulose II (born June 12, 1914 in North Paravur ; † September 1, 1996 in Piramadom Dayro ) was the second Catholicos of India of the Indian Orthodox Church from 1975 to 1996 .

Life

Paulose II was born in 1914 as PJ Paulose to parents Kasheesho Puthusseri Joseph, Vicar of St. Mary's Church in Cherai, and Elizabeth. After graduating from Cherai Ramavarma High School , he began his education at CMS College in Kottayam and at Alwayer Union Christian College .

In 1934 he was ordained a deacon and in 1938 he was ordained a priest (Kassisso) by Mor Yulius Elias , delegate of the Patriarch of Malankara. Paulose served as vicar of churches in Ceylon, Madras, Bramhavar (Karnataka), Trivandrum, Parathode and Ponkunnam and later became secretary to Mor Yulius Elias. On October 19, 1952, he was ordained a metropolitan in Homs in the name of Mor Philoxenus by the patriarch Ignatius Ephrem I Barsum . On January 12, 1953, he became Metropolitan of Kandanad , the second largest diocese of the Malankara Church. For some time, Mor Philoxenos also worked as a metropolitan in the dioceses of Kottayam and Quilon . On September 7, 1975, the Patriarch Ignatius Jacob III consecrated . Mor Philoxenus to the Catholicos of the East. In this office he was followed in 2002 by Baselios Thomas I. On September 14, 1980 in St. George's Cathedral in Damascus, the then Archbishop of Baghdad Mor Severius was ordained by Mor Baselios Paulose II as Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I. Iwas .

Baselios Paulose II accompanied Ignatius Zakka I Iwas in 1984 when he met Pope John Paul II in the Vatican.
