Basimah Yusuf Butrus

Basima Yusuf Butrus (also Basima Yousif Putros ; Arabic باسمة يوسف بطرس جمعة, DMG Bāsima Yūsuf Buṭrus Ǧumʿa ; Syrian ܒܐܣܡܐ ܝܘܣܦ ܦܛܪܘܣ; * 1963 in Erbil ) is an Iraqi biochemist and politician.

She studied biochemistry at Salahaddin University in Erbil, Kurdistan Region . She then pursued a scientific career and worked as a university lecturer. From May 2005 to 2006 she was Minister of Science and Technology in the Iraqi transitional cabinet, in which she was the only Christian woman. In 2010 she was elected to the Council of Representatives of Iraq for the Assyrian Democratic Movement .

Butrus belongs to the Chaldean Catholic Church and is involved in the Assyrian Democratic Movement. She is also active as a human rights activist and a member of the Catholic aid organization Caritas .
