history

The association came into being after the Swiss Music Festival was first awarded to Basel in 1820. It was co-initiated and directed by the music teacher Ferdinand Laur . The first listeners were parents who expressed the wish "to be able to attend the rehearsals in order to better monitor their daughters."

Johannes Brahms traveled to Basel in June 1865 to attend the Swiss premiere of Bach's St. Matthew Passion conducted by Ernst Reiter at the BGV . In February 1869, after the world premiere in Leipzig , his German Requiem was heard for the first time in Switzerland by the BGV in Basel Minster . And when the Basler Gesangverein celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1874, Brahms conducted his triumphal song on this solemn occasion .

On the 100th anniversary of the choirmaster created Hermann Suter the oratorio Le Laudi di San Francesco d'Assisi , the 125th anniversary wrote Hans Münch his Gryphius - Cantata .
