Blasphemy trial

Basuki was accused of making derogatory comments on the Koran during the election campaign . The rumor quickly spread among the Islamic population of Indonesia and caused an uproar. Basuki said he was merely criticizing the misuse of Quranic verses by his political opponents. A video sequence of Basuki's speech, edited several times, was widely distributed on the Internet. In this sequence, Basuki said, among other things, that voters should not be guided by the 5th Surah of the Koran ( Al-Māʾidam ), which warns Muslims not to be friends with Christians or Jews. He also criticized Muhammad Rizieq Shihab, the founder of the radical Islamic Indonesian organization Front Pembela Islam ; this wanted to prevent the election of a Christian. In November and December 2016, there were protests against Basuki, declared as Muslim “mass prayer”, with hundreds of thousands of participants. It was alleged that Basuki insulted the Koran. In December 2016, a blasphemy trial against Basuki was officially opened.

The blasphemy trial was conducted on May 9, 2017 by Presiding Judge Dwiarso Budi Santiarto at the South Jakarta District Court. He sentenced Basuki to two years in prison under the Blasphemy Act, Article 156a. The public prosecutor's office had previously only requested a suspended sentence. Immediately after the trial, Basuki was taken to the Cipinang Detention Center . Andreas Harsono, who has worked for Human Rights Watch in Indonesia since 2008 , described the outcome of the negotiations as "a sad day for Indonesia". On January 24, 2019, Basuki was released early from custody for good conduct.
