The Bataillon d'intervention rapide or BIR for short are battalions of the Cameroonian Army in the Cameroonian Armed Forces . Between 1999 and 2001 the battalions were called Bataillon léger d'intervention or BLI for short .

history

The first battalion was founded in 1999 to fight armed bandits and better secure the borders. Around 2007 the third and final battalion was established. In February 2008, they were used against protesters who protested against the government. There are tensions because the BIRs are materially and personally preferred to other units within the safety circles. In April 2010 there was a shooting with the Equipe spéciale d'intervention in the city of Bamenda .
