Battle of Mice was a 2005 to 2009 active US -American post-metal band.

history

Julie Christmas (formerly Made Out of Babies ) met Josh Graham ( A Storm of Light , formerly Neurosis , formerly Red Sparowes ) during the South by Southwest festival in 2005 . From an initially intense antipathy, a love relationship developed, which was characterized by spatial distance and constant conflicts up to and including public separations. In the course of their relationship, Christmas and Graham founded the band Battle of Mice together with Tony Maimone ( The Book of Knots , ex- Pere Ubu ) and Joel Hamilton (The Book of Knots, ex-A Storm of Light, ex- Shiner ). The band name refers to a disrespectful formulation of Alexander the great regarding the war of Sparta and Athens against Macedonia and the Corinthian League .

During the recording of the debut album, the situation between the two escalated, whereupon both could no longer bear the presence of the other and worked separately on the album. In 2006 the band released the only album under the title A Day of Nights . According to the history of its creation, the album primarily deals with "emotional abysses and the darker side of interpersonal relationships". The album was voted album of the year by the American music magazine Decibel .

In 2008 Joel Hamilton left the band and was replaced by Joe Tomino ( Fugees , Dub Trio , Peeping Tom ). Battle of Mice broke up in 2009 after Graham and Christmas ended their relationship and announced their breakup on a blog on Myspace .

style

The band's music is classified as post-metal. Battle of Mice are compared to popular performers of the style such as Isis , Neurosis, and Red Sparowes. A special intensity is ascribed to the album A Day of Nights in particular. "What could have been an album that shows two egos trying to make music has turned into a soul striptease that is sometimes unbearably intense, sometimes beautiful, elegiac and tragic." The intensity is attributed to the interplay between guitar playing and singing . Christmas voice in particular attracts attention. “It has found its place between Björk , Karen O and Kim Gordon .” Despite this classification, the music on Vampster is described as “difficult to categorize”, “[v] on the anger of the MADE OUT OF BABIES and the progressiveness of RED SPAROWES far away, BATTLE OF MICE are digging their own niche, full of self-destruction and pain on the one hand and courage, pride and grandeur on the other, which was instinctively balanced. ”Julie Christmas, however, rejects the comparison with Made Out of Babies According to their understanding, Battle of Mice penetrates deeper under the surface and is more melancholy.
