The tree chipmunks ( Tamiops ) are a common genus of squirrels in East and Southeast Asia . Outwardly see the chipmunks very similar.
features
Like chipmunks, tree chipmunks have five dark vertical stripes on their backs. However, tree chipmunks are related to the real beautiful squirrels , with which they are sometimes united in a common genus. The head body length of the tree chipmunk is 10 to 16 cm, plus 8 to 11 cm of tail. Their fur is gray-brown with 5 black stripes alternating with 4 light stripes on their back.
Way of life
These squirrels are tree dwellers. Depending on the area of distribution, they live in tropical rainforests , deciduous or coniferous forests. Here they live in tree hollows and come out during the day to look for nuts, fruits and seeds, and sometimes insects.
Systematics
The tree chipmunk was described by Joel Asaph Allen in 1906 . There are four types:
- Coastal chipmunk , Tamiops maritimus ( Bonhote 1900 ), Southeastern People's Republic of China , Taiwan , Vietnam, Laos
- Himalayan chipmunk , Tamiops mcclellandii ( Horsfield 1840 ), Himalayas , mountainous regions of Southeast Asia
- Cambodia chipmunk , Tamiops rodolphii ( Milne Edwards 1867 ), Cambodia and neighboring regions of Thailand , Laos and Vietnam
- Swinhoe chipmunk or Chinese tree chipmunk, Tamiops swinhoei ( Milne Edwards 1874 ), southern China, northern Myanmar, and Vietnam; isolated population in Hebei
Like real chipmunks, tree chipmunks are also sold in the small animal trade. Both genera are offered under the name "Chipmunk" without any distinction, as it is not clear to a layperson that they are two unrelated taxa.
