The Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association , based in Munich , represents the interests of over 400  craftspeople as a professional association . The task of the association is to promote handicrafts in Bavaria .

The association was founded in 1851 with the aim of improving training in the handicraft and promoting the quality of handicrafts. In the age of the industrial revolution , the craft tradition and design of industrial production should serve as a model. In 1887 the association had 2,175 members, including artists and architects as well as industrial and handicraft businesses. Activities included the organization of its own exhibitions and participation in the world exhibitions in London, Vienna, Paris and Chicago. For the purposes of the association a club house was built in the Pfandhausstraße (today Pacellistraße) near the Promenadeplatz in 1878 . The clubhouse, which was destroyed in the Second World War , was rebuilt in the same place.

The association runs a shop and the gallery for applied arts in downtown Munich. The exhibition series “Portrait in the shop” presents the objects of individual members of the association and provides information about the materials and specific techniques used. The Gallery for Applied Art was founded in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of applied art in the artistic creation of our time. With its eight annual exhibitions, the gallery deals with the various positions and directions of contemporary handicrafts. In the periodic annual exhibition of the association members their latest work is exhibited. The BKV has been publishing its own series of catalogs and publications since 1992.

One of the main tasks of the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association is to promote young talent. The BKV Prize for Young Crafts has been awarded once a year since 2006. The endowed prizes are also intended to promote the professional development of the award winners financially. The tender is therefore aimed specifically at artisans under the age of 35 who are at the beginning of their professional development but have already completed their training. The invitation to tender is addressed to all trades internationally. The BKV Prize honors work that shows independent artistic design on the basis of quality craftsmanship.

In addition, the association is represented at trade fairs such as the Internationale Handwerksmesse , Inhorgenta europe and earlier at the Eunique in Karlsruhe.

Some members of the association have been awarded prizes for their work (e.g. Bavarian State Prize, Danner Prize ), are represented with their works in museums such as the Pinakothek der Moderne (Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum) and are teaching assignments.
