The Bavarian State Youth Orchestra (BLJO) is a state youth orchestra made up of up to 100 young musicians from the Free State of Bavaria .

history

The BLJO had its first working phases in 1974/75. It is a symphony orchestra whose young participants come from all parts of Bavaria and are usually about to or are still in vocational training. The orchestra is designed as a follow-up measure to the Jugend musiziert competition and is intended to promote both the musical talent and social skills of the participants through orchestral work. The BLJO is sponsored by the Bavarian State Committee “Jugend musiziert” in Regensburg . Financing is provided by the Free State of Bavaria, the Bavarian Savings Bank Association and participant contributions.

Suitable young people are selected through open auditions and particularly successful participation in the Jugend musiziert competition . The working phases of the orchestra - spread over the year on a project basis - are based on the Bavarian holiday regulations and take place at alternating locations. These are music academies and other institutions that not only have space for up to 100 participants, but can also offer recreational value that is appropriate for the young people. At the end of the work phase, there is often a public final concert.

In recent years the orchestra has performed works such as Ein Heldenleben and Don Juan by Richard Strauss , Bruckner's 7th Symphony and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition . It worked with various young conductors, such as B. the Korean conductor Han-Na Chang , Sebastian Tewinkel and Christian Vasquez. Also Mariss Jansons , chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with the BLJO and taken with his orchestra sponsorship. The honorary conductor was Werner Andreas Albert , who led the orchestra for 25 years until 2000 and who died in November 2019. Since 2001, the sponsoring association, which is advised by an artistic advisory board, has made decisions on artistic issues.
