The Bayernland eG is a Bavarian dairy cooperative headquartered in Nuremberg. With an annual sales performance of over 300,000 tonnes of dairy products (Group) in Germany and abroad, Bayernland is one of the leading marketers of dairy products.

Company history

The company was founded on March 27, 1930 by Adam Pickel and Georg Bachmann under the name “Bayerische Markenbutter -Verkaufsgenossenschaft” in Nuremberg. Manufacturers joined forces in this cooperative . At the beginning 16, by the end of the year 45 dairies were delivering milk to the cooperative. A few years later, all types of butter were marketed under the changed name "Bayerische Butter-Vertriebsgenossenschaft". In 1936 100 milk suppliers were already connected. During the time of National Socialism the company operated as “Dairy Central Bavaria”.

In 1951 the export business was started. A sales cooperative was formed with the “Bavarian Dairy Association Kempten ” (Allgäu), and in 1954 the two merged. A processed cheese factory was built in Nuremberg . In 1957 the “beer cube” (a caraway cheese) was registered as a trademark . Initially, milk and cheese were sold under various brand names until Bayernland was officially registered as a trademark in 1965.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the dairy headquarters in Bavaria and Hesse founded the "Molkereizentrale Süd" which was renamed Bayernland eG in 1993. Since then, it has been one of the leading marketers of dairy products. At the end of the 1990s, the Bayernland range was restructured, products from Italy and Switzerland were added, as well as new own brands and private labels.

Domspitzmilch eG got involved in 2008, the Bayreuth cheese dairy in 2010 and the Pleystein dairy cooperative in 2018.

Bayernland Sterzing GmbH has established itself on the Italian market since 1970 under the Bayernland umbrella brand as the largest marketer of German butter and German cheese. In 2012 the new company building of Bayernland GmbH in Sterzing was inaugurated, in 2017 a new sales and logistics center in Verona, one of the most important shunting and transshipment centers in Northern Italy.

In addition to Italy, Bayernland milk products are sold in over 50 countries around the world.

Locations

The range is produced at various locations across Bavaria. The head office is in Nuremberg. The sales center, which markets the Bayernland brand worldwide, is also located here. There are production plants in Amberg, Bayreuth, Kemnath and Regensburg. Sales branches and sales offices are maintained in Hildesheim and Mühlheim.

The Milchhof Amberg produces cream cheese , hearty hard cheese and mozzarella . A modern mozzarella cheese dairy has been set up since 2001. In addition to conventional milk, organic milk is also processed in Amberg, with a focus on organic mozzarella and organic crusty cream cheese.

The Bayreuth cheese dairy produces and processes natural cheese . The focus of production is on mozzarella from the small 1 gram pearl to the 15 kg block for the food industry. In 2014, production was expanded to include a new assembly plant.

The cheese dairy in Kemnath produces in blocks and bread. In addition, Cagliata and Baski are produced in Kemnath , mainly for the Italian and Greek markets. The range is supplemented with smoked specialties for Germany and other European countries.

The Regensburg milk factory is the fat processing center of the Bayernland group of companies. Production focuses on fresh products and yoghurt, cream cheese, butter, butterfat and skimmed milk powder .

An extensive range of specialist products is marketed under the Bayernland brand, including semi-hard and hard cheese, mozzarella in various varieties, cream cheese, butter and yoghurt.

The range is complemented by Italian and Swiss cheese creations. Bayernland runs a range of the most popular Italian cheeses under the Isola Fresca brand. Isola Fresca primarily stands for Parmesan cheese and Gorgonzola . Bayernland's Swiss cheeses range from Emmentaler AOP to Gruyère and Appenzeller to fondue and raclette cheese.

In addition to its own brands, products are also produced for various private labels.
