Bazinga rieki is a small root-mouth jellyfish that wasdiscoveredby Denis Riek on the east coast of Australia in2011. It is a small, thick and rounded jellyfish with a diameter of less than two centimeters. The holotype was discovered in the Brunswick River in New South Wales and described by marine biologists Lisa-Ann Gershwin and Peter JF Davie in 2013. It is the only species in the monotypical genus Bazinga and this is the only genus within the family Bazingidae . This in turn is the only family of the suborder Ptychophorae described at the same time.

features

The jellyfish appear round and compact and have very regular surface structures. They have a spherical screen that is flattened at the top. The holotype is a male specimen with a body diameter of 18.7 millimeters. Various smaller paratypes were also described: two male specimens with a diameter of 15.5 and 13.7 millimeters, and two female specimens with a diameter of 16.4 and 14.0 millimeters. The body of the jellyfish has no color pigments and is translucent. The ring-shaped muscular folds on the subumbrella (underside of the umbrella) as well as the tentacles have a whitish-yellowish to orange shimmer in light, which is caused by zooxanthellae . The exumbrella (top of the umbrella) does not have a centrally located hump and there are no accumulations of warts, these are regularly distributed over the exumbrella. They are round and have a yellowish core. They may be filled with zooxanthellae. All tentacles arise in the middle of the screen at a common origin. The tentacles have a serrated edge and they have small warts. The jellyfish has a stomach that is visible from below and is about half the diameter of its body. The hidden Rhopalia distinguish this species from other root-mouth jellyfish species.

distribution

Bazinga rieki is only found in coastal waters, such as in various rivers or streams protruding into the land and / or ponds in New South Wales that are closed off from the sea depending on the tide. It is possible that the species is common in similar waters across the east coast of Australia.

Surname

The generic name Bazinga goes back to the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory , according to the descriptor . "Bazinga" is an expression that the character Dr. Dr. Sheldon Cooper uses when he has tricked or made a fool of someone and who is therefore synonymous with "tricked". “Tricked it in!” Fits in the opinion of the first describer, because Bazinga rieki , due to its small size, was probably thought to be a young of other, larger genera before, and thus “fooled” the experts. In addition, "Bazinga" refers to a musical instrument, namely a seven-string harp. The radially running channels inside the screen reminded the writer of the strings of such a harp. The species name was chosen in honor of its discoverer Denis Riek, who documented the marine biology of New South Wales on film and photographically.
