Becky Albertalli

Becky Albertalli (born November 17, 1982 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American writer for young people.

life and work

Becky Albertalli grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta in a liberal Jewish family. She attended college in Connecticut , later she studied at George Washington University in Washington, DC and at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. She earned a PhD in clinical psychology . She then worked for a few years as a psychologist , specializing in working with children and adolescents. After the birth of her first child in 2012, she left this profession and turned to writing. She lives in Atlanta with her husband Brian and two sons.

Albertalli landed a bestseller with her debut novel Just Three Words (English original title: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda ) about the coming out of a gay teenager. She won the William C. Morris Award of the American Library Association for the best debut novel in the field of youth literature in 2015, as well as the German Youth Literature Prize of the Youth Jury in 2017 . In 2018 the film adaptation of the novel was released under the title Love, Simon in cinemas.

Since then, Albertalli has published two more novels, The Upside of Unrequited and Leah on the Offbeat , which also have teenagers at the center of the plot and set in the same book universe as their debut. She cited the teenage films by John Hughes and the Australian writer Jaclyn Moriarty as influences on her books .
