The Bede BD-5 is a single-seat small aircraft in all-metal construction with a pusher propeller , which Bede Aircraft sold from the USA as a kit. In terms of dimensions, only the CriCri is even smaller.
history
Considerations for a motorized glider of this type go back to 1967. Construction finally began in 1970, and Jim Bede flew the plane for the first time in September 1971 . A total of about 5,000 kits were sold, but the manufacturer went bankrupt due to the ongoing engine problems in the mid-1970s. The US company BD-Micro Technologies Inc. offers a replica of the original Bede BD-5. In addition to BD-5B Turbopropvariante with a variable pitch propeller (BD-5T) and the BD-5J is a Micro Turbo TRS-18 - jet engine offered. The BD-5J has a shortened wingspan to 5.18 m. The machine with the aircraft registration N3038V is the smallest jet aircraft in the world recognized by the Guinness Book of Records (11/2005).
construction
The prototype had a screwed tubular frame covered with shells made of glass fiber reinforced plastic . The later series models, on the other hand, were made of aluminum in a half-shell construction. The prototype also had a V-tail , which has since given way to a conventional tail .
The prototype (registration number N500BD) initially served as a test aircraft for various engines. Initially, a 36 hp snowmobile engine from Polaris Industries was used , then a 40 hp unit from Kiekhaefer , until finally a 55 hp Hirth engine was used. The prototype has been preserved and is on display at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin .
Versions
Different variants have been developed:
- BD-5A with a wingspan of only 4.27 m, making it difficult to fly.
- BD-5B with increased wingspan to 6.40 m
- BD-5D should be certified by the FAA . This was not achieved, therefore no production.
- BD-5J was equipped with a Microturbo TRS-18 jet engine.
- BD-5S pure glider, but glide ratio unacceptable, no production.
- BD-5T was offered with a controllable pitch propeller.
Incidents
A BD-5J Microjet of the Flying Bulls , registration number N53EJ , had an accident on the afternoon of May 1, 2013 near Baumkirchen in Tyrol's Inn Valley. The aircraft was destroyed in a collision with a slope while attempting an emergency landing, and the pilot was killed.
